According to this rule, 50 percent of a person’s salary should go towards needs (housing, groceries, transportation), 30 percent towards wants (entertainment and hobbies), and the remaining 20 percent to pay off debts, saving, or investing. Consequently, a single adult living in Austin would need to earn an annual income of $99,757, which breaks down to an hourly wage of $44.12 to avoid living paycheck to paycheck. Additionally, for an Austin-based family of four (two adults and two children), the required combined income to comfortably meet lifestyle costs is $223,891.
