During the week commencing March 18 and culminating on March 23, the Austin Independent School District held a week-long celebration known as “Decade of Pride”. The event was a frontal declaration of the district’s unequivocal commitment to creating an environment that is not only safe and supportive but also inclusive.

Inclusion and Support for LGBTQIA Community

The Austin Independent School District showcased its dedication to inclusion through a series of activities to celebrate its LGBTQIA students, families, and staff. Among the many activities were the distribution of AISD Pride stickers, engaging campus activities, and an all-welcome, grand event that concluded the week-long celebration.

All-Welcome Grand Event

The event featured an eclectic mix of enjoyable items such as food trucks, special performances, and a unique student dance and social gathering. With the district’s Performing Arts Center located at the Barbara Jordan Blvd acting as the venue, this event served as an expression of acceptance and unity within the community.

Community Involvement

The wide range of activities and the eclectic crowd that attended the event demonstrated the shared commitment to respect, solidarity, and acceptance within Austin’s educational community. It highlighted the importance of such efforts in ensuring the mental and emotional well-being of LGBTQIA youth, whose struggles with acceptance and identity are often underrepresented.

Local Businesses Show Support

Beyond the school district, local businesses, including food joints like Rebel Cheese, Kerbey Lane Cafe, Paco’s Tacos, and juice bar JuiceLand, were fixtures near the event. In their own right, these businesses bridged the connection between the school district’s commitment to inclusivity and the broader societal acceptance and celebration of LGBTQIA Pride.

Community Outreach beyond ‘Decade of Pride’

Embodying the district’s commitment towards inclusivity and community support, several activities and resources are constantly provided to help create a more inclusive environment. Free HIV & STI Walk-In Testing, Resiliency Workshops, Queer Game Nights, and Queer Art Nights are part of this ongoing commitment.

The “Decade Of Pride” held by the Austin Independent School District is a huge stride towards creating a safer and more supportive environment for its students. It showcases how these celebrations can help bridge gaps, promote understanding, and foster a sense of community and acceptance amongst young students, thereby creating a brighter, more inclusive future for all.
