Austin Prom Prep DIY: Teens Encouraged to Get Creative
A Different Approach to Prom Accessories
Fellow Austin-area teenagers, remember the days when your parents would drag you into Claire’s or Target to get those standardized accessories that could be found on almost everyone in school? You might have wondered if there was a different way to stand out at events. Well, lucky for you, there is.
We’re all about that DIY – Do It Yourself. The best way to stand out and make a statement at the prom is to make your own accessories, like a handbag, bowtie, boutonnière, corsage, shoe clip, or lapel pin. Not only does it give you the chance to represent your unique style, but it also invites compliments and conversations.
Reject Consumerism, Embrace DIY
Believe it or not, you would get far more compliments on a custom, self-made piece of finery than any mass-produced item a corporation urges you to purchase. It’s time to reject consumerism and embrace your creativity!
Local Library Promotes DIY Crafting Event
What better way to celebrate prom than with a DIY crafting event? The Southeast Branch Library hosted a DIY prom accessory event on Monday, April 15. Aimed at inspiring teenagers to get creative and create their accessories for the prom night, the event was an excellent opportunity for young adults to express their individuality.
Relish Local Food Nearby
After the DIY crafting event, attendees had the opportunity to enjoy a range of food options available nearby. With several local restaurants just minutes away from the library, it made the perfect end to an enriching day. These establishments represented various cuisines – from the locally-produced Barton Springs Soda Company to a Japanese Umi Sushi Bar & Grill, there was something to cater to different taste preferences.
A Community Embracing Creativity
These DIY prom nights are just one of the many ways Austin is fostering creativity and self-expression in the community. Other events included comedy sessions at the Theatre, musical nights at Live Music Roadshows, and a wealth of arts events and workshops. The city appears dedicated to offering an alternative to mainstream consumption habits, encouraging its inhabitants – especially the younger ones – to think outside the box and produce unique, personalized items.
Support the Free Press, Support Austin
At a time when information is power, the events in Austin encourage everyone to support the free press. The Austin Chronic and numerous other outlets provide crucial coverages of these events, ensuring that everyone gets a chance to stay informed and involved in their community’s happenings.
This commitment to the free press and creative expression continues to set Austin apart as a city that encourages its inhabitants to engage, create, and think differently. So, whether you’re a teenager excited about your upcoming prom or a parent looking to inspire your child, consider the power of DIY in standing out and making a statement.
