Austin’s Tesla to Initiate Massive Layoffs
In an unfortunate turn of events, automaker giant Tesla has announced it will be initiating layoffs that will affect close to 2,700 employees based in urban Austin. The company cites a need to cut down 10% of its global workforce as the driving factor behind this unexpected development. The decision was made public by way of a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Act (WARN) notice, which was issued on April 22.
Scheduled Termination for Impacted Employees
According to the WARN notice, Tesla is set to begin the termination process for the stated 2,688 employees over a two-week period, starting June 14. The downsizing move marks a significant interruption for Tesla’s operations and worker community in the Austin region.

Tesla’s announcement of the layoffs comes on the heels of its first quarter report for the year 2024, which presented a rather bleak picture: total revenues for the company showed a decrease by 9% when compared to the previous year. This revenue decline has been considered in conjunction with the company’s decision to cut sizeable portions of its workforce.

Despite the massive layoffs, Tesla will still maintain its position as one of the region’s largest private employers, retaining an estimated 20,000 workers. This information is based on data provided by Opportunity Austin, the local economic development organization in the region.
Stacy Schmitt, Senior Vice President of Communications and External Affairs for Opportunity Austin, expressed optimism for the workers impacted by the layoffs. “It’s likely the employees impacted will find positions in other tech manufacturing positions throughout the region,” she said. “At the end of 2022, there were 44,234 tech manufacturing employees in the region. For example, the recent Samsung expansion is set to create more than 4,500 manufacturing jobs.”
Nonetheless, the pending layoffs will be a significant blow to the local Austin economy and the affected Tesla workforce.
