Austin Set to Embark on Nationwide Search for New Police Chief Under City Manager Broadnax

A Change in Command

The bustling city of Austin, Texas, is primed for a change in its law enforcement leadership. Just days after the appointment of new City Manager T.C. Broadnax, the city announced an impending nationwide search for a permanent Police Chief. Praised for his prompt action upon assuming the position, Broadnax’s top focuses involve finalizing a contract with the Austin Police Department (APD) and selecting a new head for the law enforcement agency.

Interim Leadership and the Hunt for a New Chief

Former Chief of Police Joseph Chacon’s retirement led to the appointment of Robin Henderson as Interim Police Chief. Henderson acknowledged the planned search for a more permanent replacement and voiced her proactive approach in gearing up for this transition.

Mayor Kirk Watson praised the initiative taken by the new city manager. “He has hit the ground running, and I am pleased he is moving that process forward,” Watson said. He further highlighted some desirable traits the city council hopes to find in the ideal candidate, including significant experience in managing urban policing, an emphasis on equality, and a demonstrable ability to maintain harmonious relationships with both the police force and the broader community.

Challenges Ahead for the New Chief

The city’s next top cop will face a range of challenges. Beyond leading one of Texas’ largest police departments, they will have to tackle ongoing staffing issues plaguing APD and fill hundreds of vacancies within the department.

President of the Austin Police Association, Michael Bullock, views this as a promising opportunity to demonstrate the city’s commitment to its residents and their police officers. “Now is the time to work together towards getting our city back on track, and we’re here to help make that happen”, he argued.

Searching High and Low

While the search commences, it remains unclear who the key candidates might be. City residents and police officers alike anticipate this transition and gear upon fulfilling their shared vision of a safer, friendlier Austin.
