Austin on high alert for severe storms
The residents of Austin are bracing for severe storms that are predicted to hit the area on Thursday. Counties like Travis, Williamson, Bastrop, and Burnet are in the crosshairs of the storm with an enhanced risk of experiencing severe weather conditions. According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, the main threats of the storms could be damaging winds and large hail, with the possibility of a couple of tornadoes forming in Central Texas and Southeastern parts of the state.
Heavy rainfall is also predicted, which may cause flooding in some areas. A severe thunderstorm watch has been put into effect until 5 p.m., indicating that storm formations are capable and residents should be ready to take necessary action upon progression to a severe thunderstorm warning. A severe thunderstorm warning signals “imminent danger to life and property,” requiring immediate sheltering.

The far northern sections of Hays and Caldwell counties also join the Travis, Williamson, Bastrop, and Burnet counties in the enhanced risk zone for severe storms. This zone represents a 3 out of 5 risk on the NWS’s severe weather outlook scale and implies that numerous severe storms are possible. Areas farther to the south are at a lower, slight risk of severe storms.
