Man Arrested For Attempting To Carry Loaded Handgun Into Austin Bar

In a downtown Austin bar, a tense situation unfolded last week. A man was arrested for allegedly trying to bring a loaded handgun into the establishment, also reportedly offering an employee a bribe to avoid a search.

Man Arrested: Details of the Incident

Around 11:20 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, Corey Williams, aged 24, attempted to gain access to the Pour Choices Bar on East 6th Street. It was reported to the police that Williams refused to have his shoulder bag searched at a nearby bar, Thirsty’s, thereby raising suspicions. Notably, Williams also allegedly offered $20 to an employee to gain access without a search.

Upon noticing this suspicious behavior, a staff member flagged down a nearby officer, thereby averting what may have become a potentially disastrous event. Officers then observed Williams enter Pour Choices, which seemingly did not employ strict baggage checks.

Arrest and Charges

Police approached Williams at the bar, whereupon further search, a loaded Sig P315 9mm handgun with 12 rounds was discovered in his shoulder bag. An extra magazine, with an additional 10 rounds, was also found on his person.

A visible sign, posted in accordance with state law, declared it unlawful to carry a handgun into the establishment, a bar licensed to sell alcohol. Williams’ brazen violation of this law led to his immediate arrest and the imposition of charges with a third-degree felony for unlawfully carrying a firearm into a facility licensed for alcohol sale.

The nature of Williams’ alleged bribe attempt seems to indicate a premeditated knowledge of wrongdoing, suggesting his awareness of the potentially fatal error in bringing a firearm into an establishment serving alcohol.

Felony Charge and Its Implications

Violating the specific law involving firearms in alcohol-selling establishments is considered a third-degree felony. If found guilty, charges could include penalties of up to 10 years in prison and potential fines reaching as high as $10,000. The handling of firearms within such environments is a grave concern due to the potential for unexpected violence and public disturbance.

Safety in Public Spaces

This incident in downtown Austin underscores the importance of stringent checks and the cautious handling of suspected protocol violations. Dedicated employees alerting law enforcement can be pivotal in maintaining public safety, avoiding potential tragedy.
