Austin Teacher Faces Charges After Incident Involving Student

Austin, Texas – A first-grade teacher at Reilly Elementary School in Austin has been arrested and is facing serious charges of unlawful restraint. This incident has prompted the Austin Independent School District (AISD) to start proceedings to terminate his employment.

The teacher, Luis Erasmo Resendiz Alvarado, was arrested following an investigation by the Austin police. The details of the case, as outlined in the arrest affidavit, reveal a concerning situation that unfolded on September 11. After the incident, Alvarado was placed on administrative leave while the investigation was conducted.

Details from the Incident

According to the affidavit obtained by local authorities, police officers reviewed surveillance video from a camera located just outside Alvarado’s classroom door. The evidence showed that the classroom door was open at a 90-degree angle, allowing a student to be positioned behind it, leaning into the opening.

Witnesses reported that Alvarado was seen trying to force the door open to its full extent, using his entire body to push against it. The video evidence reportedly shows him jabbing at the door several times, suggesting that he was attempting to push past an obstacle.

The affidavit further states that the student involved shared with investigators that Alvarado made eye contact with him through the door’s window. Alvarado allegedly kept the student pinned behind the door while he engaged with other students in the classroom.

Alvarado’s Confession

As the investigation progressed, Alvarado later admitted to detectives that he was aware the student was behind the door, confirming that he could see the child through the window. During questioning, he acknowledged his actions, stating, “I kept, I kept him trapped.” He also shared that he was feeling frustrated that day due to personal family matters.

The incident has raised serious concerns among parents and the school administration. In a joint statement to parents, Paty Rodriguez, Deputy Superintendent, and Brandi Hosack, Chief Human Capital Officer, emphasized that “the safety and well-being of your children are our highest priorities, and we have acted swiftly to address this incident.”

Support for Students

In response to the situation, the school is providing counseling services for students who may be affected by the incident. The administration is taking immediate steps to ensure that the environment remains safe and supportive for all students.
