Austin, Texas – Recent Arrests Linked to Operation Lone Star

On October 4, 2024, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) confirmed that Operation Lone Star has led to several arrests related to illegal immigration near the border town of Eagle Pass. This ongoing operation was launched to enhance border security and address illegal crossings.

Significant Number of Immigrants Detained

DPS officials reported that on September 30, 2024, a substantial group of 230 illegal immigrants was apprehended by DPS troopers. Among these individuals, 27 came from countries of special interest, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Egypt, and India. These countries are highlighted due to their backgrounds in terrorist activity.

The state agency stated that the 27 immigrants had attempted to illegally enter the United States to avoid detection. As a result, they were handed over to the federal government for further processing. DPS noted that these incidents significantly raise concerns about potential threats due to the origins of some of the individuals.

Other Arrests from Different Countries

Additionally, DPS troopers arrested another group of 41 illegal immigrants who were charged with criminal trespass. This group consisted of individuals from various countries, including Brazil, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Argentina, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic. The charges reflect the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement at the border.

Statements from DPS Officials

DPS Director Steven McCraw addressed the situation, stating, “It is this type of activity, these attempted illegal crossings between the ports of entry by people coming from areas that are hot spots for terrorist activity that clearly highlight the concerns of Governor Abbott and the state of Texas.” He emphasized that these individuals are not merely seeking asylum but are instead attempting to cross into the country undetected, which raises alarms regarding national security.

Another Incident Mentioned

135 illegal immigrants in the Hopedale subdivision, located a few miles north of Eagle Pass. This arrest further illustrates the challenges faced by law enforcement in managing illegal crossings and underscores the ongoing need for vigilance.

Operation Lone Star’s Impact

Since its inception in March 2021, Operation Lone Star has recorded over 47,000 criminal arrests as of September 26, 2024. The initiative has significantly impacted border enforcement and security measures, aimed at curbing illegal immigration and related activities.

As the situation continues to develop, Texas authorities remain focused on preventing illegal crossings and ensuring the safety of the communities along the border. The ongoing operations will likely intensify as law enforcement responds to the rising challenges and concerns associated with illegal immigration.

The situation at the Texas-Mexico border marks a critical point in discussions around national security and immigration policies. Texas officials are pledging continued efforts to address these issues while maintaining public safety.
