Austin Police Department Faces Setbacks with Recent Suspensions

This past month has seen some shake-ups within the Austin Police Department (APD) as three officers have been suspended for a variety of offenses. These disciplinary actions were made public through memos from the city’s Office of Police Oversight, drawing attention to some serious issues at play.

Two Officers Indefinitely Suspended

Two of the officers have received what is referred to as an indefinite suspension, which is pretty much the same as being dismissed from the department. The first of these suspensions occurred on December 13. This officer was arrested not only for driving while intoxicated but also for unlawfully carrying weapons. That’s not all; he also didn’t play ball during an Internal Affairs investigation and went off on an unauthorized trip while on leave. Such actions don’t just raise eyebrows; they bring a lot of concern about conduct in law enforcement.

The second officer faced similar consequences just days later, on December 18. This officer’s suspension stems from attempts to forge an inappropriate connection with a victim, which involved sharing private information. This kind of behavior outright undermines trust between the police and the community they serve, making it a serious issue that needs addressing.

Unofficial Selfies During Presidential Visit

The third officer took a somewhat different route to suspension. He was placed on temporary leave from November 26 to December 6 for taking photos while on duty during a presidential visit. It’s not uncommon for officers to be on high alert during such significant events, so whipping out a camera might not have been the best decision this officer could make. Engaging on social media while on the job can be risky business, especially when such high-profile gatherings are involved.

Serious Child Injury Charges for One Officer

Meanwhile, outside of these suspensions, Officer Cameron Caldwell is in hot water facing charges for injury to a child in nearby Williamson County. The reported incidents involve accusations that he caused bodily harm to a child younger than 14 years old. Allegedly, Caldwell struck the child’s face and even threw a toy at him, in addition to shoving him into his bed. These actions are no small matter and are classified as 3rd degree felonies, which could have serious repercussions.

Turning himself in at the Williamson County Jail, Caldwell is currently awaiting further investigation into the matter, with the Cedar Park Police Department carrying out criminal investigations. Meanwhile, the Austin Police Department has placed him on restricted duty, as they prepare for an administrative investigation of their own.

Past Misconduct**

It’s worth mentioning that Caldwell isn’t new to controversy. Back in 2016, he was suspended for 45 days after an incident where he used pepper spray on a handcuffed man during the South by Southwest festival. This earlier misconduct, paired with his current suspension and charges, brings into question the ongoing challenges faced by the Austin Police Department in maintaining a trustworthy and accountable force.

For those interested in the nitty-gritty details, the city of Austin has made a comprehensive collection of disciplinary memos available for review. This allows the community to stay informed about the actions and attitudes of the officers who are sworn to protect them.

As these stories unfold, it’s clear that the challenges for the APD are far from over. Ensuring safety and accountability within law enforcement remains a crucial conversation for the community of Austin.
