Austin City Limits Music Festival Generates $8.1 Million for Parks Improvement
On May 13th, it was announced that the 2023 Austin City Limits Music Festival (ACL) raised a record-breaking $8.1 million for the enhancement of Austin’s parks. The announcement was made at a special event at the McBeth Recreation Center inside Zilker Park, attended by representatives of C3 Presents, Austin Parks Foundation (APF), the Parks and Recreation Department (PARD), and local council members.
This figure takes the total funds contributed by the ACL Music Festival to Austen Parks over the past 19 years beyond $63 million.
Where the ACL Festival Funds Go
In 2023, funds received from ACL were divided into three main areas. An amount of $3.1 million was allocated for city-wide park projects, $2.5 million supported the infrastructure necessary to make these park projects happen, while $1.5 million went directly to PARD for use in park projects at their discretion.
These funds help support APF’s initiatives such as volunteer programs like It’s My Park Day, the “In the Park” series of free family-friendly park programs, grant funding for community-initiated projects, and the Adopt-a-Park program. In addition, the resources also facilitated advocacy efforts, leading to a near $3M boost in PARD’s budget for park shade, land management, and maintenance positions in 2023.
Notable Projects Benefit from ACL Funds
Certain projects that significantly benefited from the last year’s ACL funds included the Earl J. Pomerleau Pocket Park and the McBeth Recreation Center. The Play ATX campaign, a joint venture between APF and the San Antonio Spurs, also received critical support, enabling the renovation of local parks and basketball courts across Austin city.
Furthermore, trail work along the Barton Creek Greenbelt also witnessed considerable progress with the help of ACL funding. Through this trail work effort, the Siglo Group has flagged numerous ecological issues, completed 82 projects, and made significant strides in addressing the remaining problems.
Future Investments in Austin’s Parks
The latest windfall of $8.1 million will be dispatched again towards supporting park projects, infrastructural enhancements, and a portion will be given to PARD. A notable development is Austin’s first public All Abilities Playground at Onion Creek Metropolitan Park. The playground promises to offer an inclusive play area, restroom facilities, picnic pavilions, parking spots, and several innovative elements, all to be financed with the help of the ACL fest funds.
Other ongoing projects, such as work at Deep Eddy Municipal Pool and refurbishment of the beach volleyball courts at Zilker, are also slated to benefit considerably.
An Impact Across Austin
With substantial ACL Music Festival funds being allocated for park improvements, the effects are significantly visible throughout the city’s council districts. Adopt-a-Park groups are encouraged to apply for Neighborhood or Community Impact Grants and Park Design Services to initiate small-scale improvements or even major park refurbishments. Last year, these grants helped realize ten park improvement projects identified by community members.
