FESTIVALS
Austin City Limits Music Festival, which takes place in October, has become so large that it now occupies Zilker Park in the city’s downtown region for two weekends. You can expect approximately 140 bands on 8 stages whether you arrive from October 1-3 or October 8-10, 2021. There are art installations, wonderful cuisine (tacos are a necessity in Texas), and plenty of opportunities to meet local entrepreneurs and startups. The Killers, Jay Z, and Bonobo are among the artists on the bill this year.

Austin’s downtown area Rodeo Austin is the place to go if you’re seeking for something different. The next Rodeo will take place on March 13, 2021, and will last through March 27, 2021. Fans may enjoy the country fair, which includes a carnival, a Wild West Show, and pig races, in addition to the actual rodeo, which features some of the world’s top pro riders. Rodeo is Texas’ official sport, and you won’t want to miss it while you’re here. An yearly stock show is also a big part of the Rodeo. Exhibitors come from all across the country to show off their animals and horses in Austin, and even small children participate in the junior competition. It wouldn’t be Austin without some form of live music, so plan to dance to some new tunes when you’re down there for the Rodeo.

Moontower is a newcomer to the scene, having debuted in 2012. You’d never guess it based on the fact that it’s already featured Aziz Ansari and Maria Bamford. Moontower Comedy Festival is a three-weekend comedy festival that takes place in three different venues in downtown Austin. You can get tickets for the entire three-weekend festival, for a single day, or for an individual artist’s stand-up show. You might also be able to listen to a live podcast — everything goes at Moontower.

Every night, around sunset, almost 1.5 million bats take flight beneath Austin’s renowned Congress Ave Bridge. It can take up to half an hour because there are so many of them. The city holds a celebration to honor these bats once a year, complete with arts and crafts, food, drinks, live music, and a bat costume contest. Last Bat Fest was held on August 28th, 2021, and which had a variety of “bat activities” to participate in…whatever that means. If none of these events appeal to you, there are a variety of other wild festivals in Austin that you can attend at almost any time of year. There are dozens of 5k races, as well as arts and crafts festivals and folk music festivals.
There’s even an event honoring Eyeore’s birthday (yep, the Winnie the Pooh character), so see what’s going on if you find yourself in Austin, Texas anytime soon!
