In a remarkable turn of events, one of the best pastry chefs in Austin, Amanda Rockman, has taken an unconventional approach to her career path and finally opened a standalone bakery and coffee shop. Despite not having a central spot for her baked creations previously, Rockman already enjoys a strong local fan base thanks to her outstanding and creative confectioneries.
Rockman’s latest venture, Rockman Coffee + Bakeshop, is set to become her first solo bakeshop, opening in Fall 2024. The pastry chef has carved her niche in the industry, notably, by first gaining popularity and recognition, then later appending her name to a concrete building. She is recognized as one of the primary figures in Austin’s pastry industry, having been nominated multiple times for the prestigious Pastry Chef of the Year title at the CultureMap’s Tastemaker Awards.
Rockman is no stranger in the culinary circles of New Waterloo, the hospitality group responsible for several local favorites, including the South Congress Hotel, Otoko, Sway, and La Condesa. Her new bakeshop, located at Suite 200, 2400 East Cesar Chavez, consolidates her vast experience and creativity from different enterprises into one central hub – a culmination of her twenty-year career in the restaurant industry.
The Rockman Coffee + Bakeshop plans to elevate the city’s bakery scene with an array of offerings spanning various categories such as caffeine, gluten, sugar, butter, and even booze. Rockman’s pint-sized vision isn’t limited to standard pastries. In addition to daily offerings like cookies, cakes, croissants, and focaccia sandwiches, the bakery will also feature several products that cater to the diverse tastes of Austinites.
Some of the unique specialties set to redefine Austin’s bakery landscape include halva-infused chocolate chip cookies, French onion, and NY-cheesecake flavored cream cheese, and churro croissants. Patrons of the bakery can also enjoy diverse beverages, including La Colombe coffee, teas, and Rockman’s special cocktail recipes, all available for takeout or to be enjoyed on-site.
Beyond satiating Austinites’ sweet cravings, Rockman Coffee + Bakeshop aims to provide a distinctive experience for its customers. With 30 spots spread across tables, a bar, and a lounge area, the bakery aims to create a cozy atmosphere where guests can either grab and go or enjoy their treats while observing the bakers in action. Whether customers are there for a quick coffee run or to relax while indulging in pastries, Rockman promises impeccable service, an empowered team, and unrivaled product consistency.
“When people come to Rockman, I want them to feel how much we care,” says Rockman. “We care about each baked good we make, each espresso we pull, and even the boxes we built to put their pastries to go in. Everything about Rockman has an intention.”
Rockman’s innovative baked goods, coupled with an emphasis on customer experience, represents a fresh vision for bakeries in Austin. Her evident dedication to quality and her team reflects a confident stride into a new era, where she hopes to continue elevating the culinary scene and secure a place in the heart of Austin’s food-loving populace.
