Austin ISD Students’ Performance in STAAR EOC Assessments

Austin ISD Students Show Stable Results in STAAR EOC Assessments

A recent review of the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) End-of-Course (EOC) scores shows that high school students from Austin Independent School District (AISD) maintained relatively stable scores in spring 2024 compared to the previous year. Despite slight variances, the performances didn’t indicate significant changes.

AISD Students Versus State Averages

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) revealed that AISD students performed below state averages in three out of five subjects, namely, U.S. history, English I, and algebra I. There was a slight decrease in scores from 2023 in these areas. On the positive side, in U.S. history, the students outperformed the state average, while in biology, they matched the state average, with 57% of students meeting grade level.

Comparison Across State

Across the state, student scores remained consistent in algebra I, biology, and English I compared to the previous year. However, a noticeably increased number of students met grade level standards in English II, though a drop was observed for U.S. history.

A Comment from TEA Commissioner

“The [EOC] results highlight both the progress Texas students and educators have made, and the challenges that remain to help students improve outcomes, which can only come from a robust assessment and accountability system,” noted TEA Commissioner Mike Morath in a public statement. “While we celebrate the gains in English II, we must also acknowledge the areas where student performance has not recovered to prepandemic levels.”

Next Steps for Parents

The TEA has made provisions for parents to view their children’s individual scores online. The service includes access to each student’s answers to each question on the STAAR EOC assessments. Results for grades 3-8 will be publicly available starting June 14.

This assessment provides an invaluable baseline for understanding student progress and overall academic proficiency. With these scores, educators and parents alike can identify areas that require attention and apply relevant resources to promote academic success. As the Austin community continues to navigate educational challenges amid the pandemic, these findings are instrumental in shaping supportive and effective learning environments to ensure student success.
