Sponsor Our ArticlesThis week, Austin braces for a significant drop in temperatures as an arctic air intrusion is expected to hit the area. The National Weather Service has issued warnings for plummeting overnight lows, with potential hard freezes. Residents are encouraged to safeguard their families, pets, and plants from the harsh conditions that will set in after a brief taste of warmer weather early in the week. Additionally, cold weather shelters will be available for those in need, ensuring everyone stays warm during this winter chill.
Hey there, Austin! It’s time to grab your warm blankets and head to the store for some hot cocoa because we’re in for quite a chilly surprise this week. The National Weather Service has issued a friendly warning about an impending arctic air intrusion that’s gearing up to hit the Austin area. As we dive into the details, you may want to keep your favorite winter gear close by!
First things first, Monday and Tuesday will still bring us a taste of Texas warmth with daytime temperatures reaching into the 60s and 70s. So, if you have any outdoor plans, now’s the time to enjoy them! Expect partly to mostly cloudy skies, which might even sprinkle in a few low chances of afternoon showers on Tuesday. Perfect for a cozy indoor day afterwards!
But hold onto your hats, because things are about to get frosty! By Tuesday night, expect those temperatures to plummet as the arctic air arrives in Central Texas. Overnight lows are projected to dip into the upper 20s, which means that you’ll definitely want to bundle up before heading to bed. And come Wednesday? That’s when the real chill sets in with high temperatures only sneaking into the low 40s!
And just when you think it couldn’t get any colder, here comes a double whammy! A second hard freeze is likely from Wednesday night into Thursday morning. So, if you’re planning to wake up bright and early on Thursday, be prepared for a serious chill, with temperatures possibly dropping into the lower 20s by sunrise. Wind chill values will stick around in the frosty teens during this period, making it all feel even colder!
Don’t pack away those winter coats just yet! Another freeze could sneak in on Friday with lows expected to hover in the 30s. Although there’s a slight chance of seeing some wintry precipitation on Friday, we’re not expecting any ice to accumulate – so no need to worry about those hazardous road conditions… at least not this time!
As temperatures begin to drop, remember the four P’s to keep everyone safe and cozy: people, pets, pipes, and plants! Make sure your loved ones and furry friends are warm, your pipes are insulated, and your plants are protected from the harsh conditions. The weather service has also emphasized the importance of caution when using space heaters, given their link to increased house fires during this chilly season.
In an effort to keep everyone safe, the city of Austin has announced the opening of cold weather shelters due to the imminent drop in nighttime temperatures. If you or someone you know needs a warm place to stay, registration for these shelters will occur nightly from 6-8 p.m. at One Texas Center, located at 505 Barton Springs Road in South Austin. It’s all about staying safe and warm!
As we roll into the weekend, Saturday will be a little less chilly with mostly cloudy skies and highs in the low 70s. But hang tight! A strong cold front is expected to sweep through on Saturday night, making way for another blast of cold air. Sunday morning will greet us with cool temperatures in the 30s, but you can expect a gradual warming trend as the afternoon peaks in the low to mid-50s.
Looking ahead to midweek, confidence is slowly building that an even cooler front could arrive, bringing potentially the coldest temperatures of this winter season. Thursday morning seems like it’ll be a real shocker, with possible lows dipping into the teens and low 20s. So, if you’re not a fan of the cold, be sure to keep those warm socks and blankets handy – you’re going to need them!
Stay tuned as the weather updates unfold, and take care to stay warm, Austin!
