Austin Art Exhibits Blend Fantasy and Reality this March

The art scene in Austin, Texas is renowned for its vibrancy and dynamism. This March, nine compelling art exhibits will further blur the line between fantasy and reality, showcasing an array of local and regional talent.

Celebrating Austin at the Mexic-Arte Museum

Until March 17th, the Mexic-Arte Museum will host the ‘Mix ‘n’ Mash: Celebrating Austin’ exhibit. Over 200 artists from Austin and surrounding areas will be displaying their unique artwork, reflecting the eclectic and magnetic personality of the city. The exhibition covers a wide range of topics, from the vibrant music scene to the diverse cuisine and the captivating personalities that make Austin unique. Proceeds from the artwork sales will go towards supporting the many programs and collections in the museum.

Bending Moment at Lora Reynolds Gallery

From now until March 23rd, lovers of minimalist sculptures and installations can visit the Lora Reynolds Gallery. The gallery is showcasing works by Jong Oh, who utilizes thread, metal rods, rocks, plexiglass, and LED lights to create three-dimensional line drawings that seem to float in space. His installations are sensitive to the spaces in which they are showcased, creating a delicate balance between the artwork, architecture, and the pull of gravity.

Synchronicity at Link Pin Art

Eva Weiss and Cheryl Finfrock are showcasing their unifying focus on the human subject in their exhibition ‘Synchronicity’, which is running until March 23rd. Their distinctive works, Weiss’s theatrical photography and Finfrock’s narrative paintings, blend together to create dreamlike imagery that is both classical and dramatic.

Feminist Visions at Blanton Museum of Art

Drawn from the collection of Gilberto Cárdenas and Dolores Garcia, the Blanton Museum is showcasing ‘Unbreakable: Feminist Visions’, focusing on themes of feminism and survival. Running until March 31st, the powerful artworks on display lend a voice to those often overlooked or marginalized in society, from immigrants and domestic workers, to defiant young women and rebels.

Apotheosis at Lydia Street Gallery

Until March 31st, visitors can experience ‘Apotheosis’ at the Lydia Street Gallery. This showcase features recent works of exceptionally talented Austin artists Kathy McCarty and David Thornberry. Drawing from dreams, life, and music, McCarty’s vivid pictorial paintings are juxtaposed with Thornberry’s observational paintings.

Common Drugs and the Fantasies They Produce at Wally Workman Gallery

Visitors to the Wally Workman Gallery can see Ian Shults’s vivid acrylic paintings which offer a glaring reflection of mid-20th century’s debaucherous underbelly. Running until March 31st, ‘Common Drugs and the Fantasies They Produce’ weaves together fine art aesthetics and illicit behaviors to create witty commentaries on humanity’s darker instincts.

A Mother and Her Sun at Ivester Contemporary

Running until April 13th, ‘A Mother and Her Sun’ at the Ivester Contemporary showcases new works by Austin-based artist, Tom Jean Webb. Through poetic and playful images, Webb pays mindful homage to the power of the natural world.

Greatest Hits at Davis Gallery

Running until April 6th at Davis Gallery, veteran artist Malou Flato demonstrates her versatility and artistic prowess in ‘Greatest Hits’. The exhibit features a variety of her works, including watercolors, oils, and digital prints, offering audiences a delightful study in nuance.

Field Notes on Augury: Isti Mirant Stella at Flatbed Center for Contemporary Printmaking

From March 9th through April 20th, the Flatbed Center for Contemporary Printmaking will host Serena Perrone’s ‘Field Notes on Augury: Isti Mirant Stella’. Drawing from literature, art history, and celestial phenomena, Perrone’s works convey a sense of both wonder and unease in confronting landscapes.
