Austin, Texas – In a significant move for the tech industry, ABBYY, an AI-focused data-processing company, has announced it is relocating its headquarters from California to the capital of Texas. This decision comes shortly after Google made headlines for expanding its presence in the Austin area. ABBYY’s transition to Austin signifies a growing trend of tech companies shifting their operations from the high-cost environment of Silicon Valley to the more affordable and business-friendly Lone Star State.
ABBYY has a rich history that traces back to the former USSR in the early 1990s, where it made early investments in artificial intelligence and machine learning. For many years, the company operated out of Russia before making a move to Milpitas, California, just north of San Jose, in 2022. Now, the firm is setting its sights on Austin, a city renowned for its thriving tech community, often referred to as Silicon Hills.
ABBYY’s CEO, Ulf Persson, expressed enthusiasm for the transition, stating, “ABBYY has empowered thousands of organizations worldwide to digitally transform their business with purpose-built AI for intelligent automation. As a leader, we are constantly transforming and trying to improve ourselves.” The company plans to leverage its new location to enhance collaboration among its teams.
In addition, ABBYY’s Chief Technology and Product Officer, Patrick Jean, mentioned that this move is a significant milestone in the company’s transformation. “By bringing our product teams closer to our leadership, we will be fostering the collaboration that strengthens our innovation and delivery of AI-driven solutions,” he stated. This strategic relocation aims to ensure that ABBYY continues to lead the market in intelligent automation.
Despite the headquarters move to Austin, ABBYY plans to keep its California office operational. A spokesperson confirmed that no employees would be required to relocate, allowing staff to maintain their current positions while encouraging a more integrated approach in their new headquarters.
Austin has become increasingly popular among tech companies fleeing California, with many seeking the city’s diverse talent pool, lower cost of living, and business-friendly environment. Data from a 2024 report by Texas Realtors revealed that approximately 668,000 people moved to Texas in 2022, with a notable portion—around 175,000—coming from California. This migration trend highlights the appeal that Austin holds for individuals and companies alike.
ABBYY’s arrival in Austin means it will join a prestigious group of tech giants already established in the area, including tech powerhouses like Google, Apple, Oracle, and Tesla. Each of these companies has made Austin a central hub for their operations, which underscores the city’s status as a leading tech destination.
As ABBYY transitions to its new home, the company is well-positioned to thrive in the growing AI landscape. With a focus on innovation and collaboration, the team looks forward to enhancing its product offerings and continuing to play a pivotal role in the intelligent automation revolution.
With the backing of Austin’s supportive business ecosystem, ABBYY’s move not only signifies a personal milestone for the company but also reflects the broader trend of tech companies gravitating toward Texas as they seek new opportunities for growth and development.
