Austin Bar Owner Speaks Out Following Tragic Shooting

A Night of Fun Turns to Tragedy

Austin, Texas – A Northeast Austin bar owner is stepping into the spotlight following a heartbreaking shooting incident that took place in his parking lot earlier this month. Luis Alberto Sol-Rivas, the owner of Michelobos Sports Bar, described his dismay after the fatal encounter involving 30-year-old Tyler Cochran, a familiar face at the establishment. “He was a regular customer. He was our friend and I feel sorry for his loss,” Sol-Rivas expressed, his words tinged with sadness.

Long-Standing Safety Concerns

In the early hours of November 1st, tragedy struck when Cochran was shot and killed outside the bar. The suspected shooter, 20-year-old Clayton Taitague, was also injured by a security guard during the chaotic scene. This incident has forced Sol-Rivas to confront a troubling trend; he mentions that the parking lot has been a site of dangers for several years.

“I understand they don’t feel safe right now because of what happened,” he shared, referring to the unease felt by the community following the shooting. It’s important to note that this area has seen its fair share of trouble. In fact, police have logged 61 calls for service in this location just this year. A staggering number indicating that safety has been an ongoing issue.

Seeking Solutions

In his quest for a viable solution, Sol-Rivas had previously reached out to Austin Police to express his concerns and request assistance. Unfortunately, he claims he didn’t receive the necessary support. “I was trying to do my best to hire more security in the parking lot. I did much as I can,” Sol-Rivas stated, showcasing his frustrations and commitment to safety.

The Nature of the Trouble

According to Sol-Rivas, the individuals inciting chaos in the parking lot are not his loyal customers, but rather groups of underage people gathering in the area. “After 1:30, 1:45 in the morning, young people from different locations come here. They start burning tires, they start fighting, and they even shoot in the air,” he explained, painting a picture of the disturbances that have plagued the bar’s vicinity.

Taking Action

In response to the recent violence, Michelobos has ramped up security both inside and outside the premises. Sol-Rivas announced that everyone will now be required to present an ID and be over 21 to access the parking lot. This is a crucial step in keeping the atmosphere fun and safe for guests who come to enjoy games and sports.

Community Assurance

In light of the incident, local police have assured the community that safety is a top priority. Commander Lee Davis from the Austin Police Department stated, “We want to reassure the community that things are happening. They’re happening aggressively and at a quick pace.” This is a positive message as the community looks for reassurance and solutions.

Looking Forward

Sol-Rivas is holding a meeting with the Austin Police this Tuesday to brainstorm potential solutions to enhance security further. He is hopeful that from this tragedy can emerge a more robust plan to drive out troublemakers and provide a safe space for his patrons. “This is a place to have fun, to come and watch games and sports,” he emphasized.

As the neighborhood grapples with the implications of the recent events, one thing is clear: the community is calling for change. With dedicated efforts, perhaps Michelobos Sports Bar can reclaim its spirit as a beloved local hangout, free from fear and full of laughter.
