Austin City Manager Takes His Time for Next Police Chief Selection

AUSTIN, Texas – The city manager of Austin has made it clear that he is in no rush to bring his pursuit of the next police chief to a conclusion. Addressing the public last Friday, City Manager T.C. Broadnax revealed that a special council meeting initially scheduled to seal the deal on the next police chief, planned for July 30, will not take place. The city manager is currently examining his options, deciding between two candidates and taking into consideration feedback from both interview panels related to the city’s stakeholders and the City Council.

The Finalists

The city of Austin revealed the two frontline contenders for the police chief’s position. Lisa Davis and Jeffrey Norman, both experienced officials from Cincinnati and Milwaukee Police Departments respectively, are the city’s top choices.

Assistant Chief Lisa Davis, a veteran of over three decades with Cincinnati’s police force, currently supervises the homicide, major offender, narcotics, and personal crimes divisions. Her biography places an emphasis on her passion for community relations and policing.

Chief Jeffrey Norman hails from the Milwaukee Police Department, where he has served since 1996, leading the department as Chief for the last four years. Norman’s biography features achievements throughout his career, praising his dedication and performance as an officer and later as chief.

Importance of the Decision

“This position is too critical to our Police Department, the City organization as a whole, and this community to rush,” said Broadnax in his public statement. “Therefore, I’m going to take additional time to consider our two very qualified candidates before making a final decision.” As for when the final decision will be made, Broadnax did not provide an expected timeframe.

Given the critical role of the police chief in ensuring public safety and maintaining order within the city, this decision is crucial for Austin’s future. The need for a thorough process in selecting the best candidate was echoed by other officials, indicating the city’s commitment to a high standard of leadership for the police department.

Community Engagement

Residents of Austin continue to be invested in the decision, hoping that whoever takes up the mantle will not only facilitate stronger community-police relations but also help lower crime rates and increase safety in the city. The decision also comes at a time when law enforcement agencies across the country are facing public scrutiny and the need for accountability and transparency is growing.

As Austin moves toward a new era of law enforcement, both residents and city officials are looking forward to a final decision on the new chief. As it stands, the community acknowledges the importance of taking necessary time to ensure the right leader is chosen to head Austin’s Police Department, further enhancing the city’s public safety initiatives.
