Austin Coalition Hosts Free Brunch: A Stepping Stone Towards Uplifting Black Men’s Mental Health
In an era where mental health discussions are escalating, the Austin Justice Coalition (AJC) is championing a unique approach to tackle mental health concerns among Black men. On June 22, AJC will host “Bro Brunch: A Black Man’s WineDown”, a dedicated brunch event for Black men. The event aims to address, discuss and celebrate the mental wellbeing of Black men in the Austin community.
The Setting and Purpose
The brunch is set to take place at RSRV, a newly established wine bar located at the Eastside Country Club. The AJC, known for its active engagement with Austin’s Black community, has always aimed to create a balance between serious discussions and fun. Alongside its regular activities which range from understanding social patterns within Austin’s Black community to participating in the arts, the AJC’s upcoming brunch is set to blend valuable insights on mental health with a relaxing day out.
The Schedule and Activities
Several interactive sessions are planned throughout the day, allowing participants to engage, learn and walk away with practical tools to enhance their mental health. From open discussions and group therapy sessions to conflict resolution training, the day is packed with opportunities for personal growth and community bonding. Additionally, live music, featuring DJ PFunk, DJ Quan, and DJ Big Champ, as well as complimentary food and drinks, offer a light-hearted atmosphere.
Partnerships and Support
For the success of this initiative, the AJC is partnering with Tomorrow’s Promise Foundation, a Baltimore-based organization that equips young individuals with life skills. Led by Bill Wallace, a former juvenile detainee, the foundation seeks to divert youth from the criminal justice system and develop future leaders. Supporting ‘Bro Brunch: A Black Man’s WineDown’, in Wallace’s opinion, is a way to address the unmet mental health needs of Black men and provide them effective tools to handle life’s adversities.
A Multifaceted Approach
The event’s design, combining serious discussions on men’s mental health with entertaining activities, demonstrates the importance of a multifaceted approach. While it is critical to address sensitive subjects like mental health, it is equally essential to cultivate an environment of fun and enjoyment. The wine-down brunch seeks to do just that, indicating a way forward in tackling mental health discussions.
The registration for ‘Bro Brunch: A Black Man’s WineDown’ is free, and one can RSVP to it via Eventbrite. More information about Austin’s Justice Coalition can be obtained from austinjustice.org.
