Austin Community Remembers a Remarkable Life: Ada M. Engler

The city of Austin is mourning the loss of an incredible woman, Ada M. Engler, who passed away on March 21, 2025, at the age of 90. Ada’s life was a beautiful tapestry of faith, family, and education that touched the hearts of many. Born on January 14, 1935, in New Orleans, Louisiana, she was the beloved daughter of Adolph Duplessis and Lucille Cazabat and grew up with a close-knit family, including two sisters and two brothers, some of whom have sadly preceded her in death.

A Family Legacy

Ada is survived by her daughter, Michelle Phillips, and her three grandchildren, Ethan, Gavin, and Collette Phillips, who were her pride and joy. She shared a special bond with her first cousin, Lydia Roberts, who was not only her confidante but also her childhood best friend. Their adventures together – from school days to family picnics and community gatherings – created memories that will be cherished forever.

The Heart of a Strong Woman

Raised in the Catholic faith, Ada’s spirituality was a cornerstone of her life. Baptized at the magnificent St. Louis Cathedral, she attended St. Peter and Paul Church in her early years, where her commitment to her community was evident. Many remember her friendly smile and warm presence at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Austin, where she was an active parishioner.

Passionate About Learning

Ada’s early education was marked by excellence. She excelled in subjects like math and literature and showed an impressive knack for card games and sports, earning the title of champion ping pong player at Nicholls High School in New Orleans. After high school, she stepped into the role of a provider for her family, contributing significantly to her niece Felicia’s upbringing, showcasing her nurturing nature.

Chasing Dreams and Building a Future

Seeking better job opportunities, Ada moved to California with a friend, which led her to meet her future husband, Theodore Wojcik. They were married on May 30, 1964, at St. John Bienne Catholic Church, culminating in a beautiful honeymoon at Yosemite Valley and Carmel by the Sea. Tragically, in 1969, her husband lost his life in an accident, and Ada bravely stepped up as a single mother, raising Michelle with unwavering love and guiding her through life.

In 1980, aiming for further education, Ada and her daughter moved back to San Jose. At the remarkable age of 48, she graduated with a degree in Accounting from San Jose State University in 1984, proving that it’s never too late to chase your dreams. Following her degree, she worked as an auditor for Lockheed Martin, where her exceptional skills shone brightly.

A New Chapter in Austin

In 1985, she married Kenneth Engler and later transitioned to Austin, Texas, in 1998, to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren. The joy of spending time with them was paramount in Ada’s life, and their cherished moments included fun-filled trips to the Austin Zoo and engaging family game nights.

A Celebration of Life

Ada’s vibrant spirit has left its mark on the Austin community, and her loss is profoundly felt. A funeral mass is planned for April 11, 2025, at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, starting at 10:00 AM, followed by a reception where family and friends can come together to celebrate her extraordinary life.

As the community reflects on the legacy of Ada M. Engler, we find comfort in the love she shared and the lives she touched. May her memory continue to inspire us all to cherish family, community, and education.
