On a crisp December day, the Austin community felt an immense loss as news broke about the passing of Connie Lewis Gammill, a cherished educator, mother, and friend. At just 57 years old, Connie left behind a legacy that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on everyone she encountered throughout her extraordinary life.
Connie was born on November 19, 1967, in the enchanting town of New Braunfels, Texas, where her journey began. Growing up, she attended Shiner Elementary and later, Shiner High School, from which she graduated in 1986. Fueling her passion for education, Connie earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from the University of Texas in 1990. As many can attest, she dedicated the next 29 years of her life to shaping the minds and hearts of students at West Ridge Middle School.
During her illustrious teaching career, Connie primarily served as a Physical Education teacher but also wore many hats, coaching volleyball, basketball, track, and golf. It was her goal to instill a love of sports and teamwork in her students, creating a nurturing environment where children could thrive both physically and mentally.
Described by peers and students alike as a kind, funny, and warm-hearted Christian woman, Connie was someone who lit up the room with her contagious laugh and welcoming smile. Whether it was on the playground or in the classroom, she always made her students feel at ease, encouraging them to be their best selves. Her undeniable passion for education and sports made her a role model not only in academics but also in life.
Outside her tenured career, Connie loved spending quality time with her family and friends. She was a dedicated mother to her two sons, Tyler Lewis Gammill and Jordan Major Gammill, proudly attending their games and cheering them on as they navigated their passions for soccer and golf. Family gatherings for Connie often revolved around sports, laughter, and making cherished memories with those she adored.
In addition to her sons, Connie is survived by her loving mother, Mary Kathryn Lewis, and her sister, Lana Dubberke, along with her niece and nephews. Sadly, she was preceded in death by her father, Johnny Bob Lewis, leaving a bittersweet note on the otherwise vibrant tapestry of her life.
The community is rallying together in remembrance of this remarkable woman. A memorial service to honor Connie’s life will take place at Hyde Park Baptist Church in Austin, Texas, on January 6th, at 11:00 AM. Prior to the service, visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, providing friends and family with an opportunity to share their stories and remember Connie’s exceptional life.
For those wishing to pay their respects through floral arrangements, arrangements can be made through Freytags in Austin, Texas. As we hold dear the memories of Connie Lewis Gammill, we find comfort knowing that her spirit and teachings will continue to inspire future generations.
In a world that may not always seem warm, Connie’s vibrant personality and commitment to education remind us all of the importance of kindness, laughter, and community. The Austin community has indeed lost a shining star.
