Austin, 2024: A Year of Closures

The year 2024 witnessed the closure of several beloved eateries in Austin, leaving local patrons and food enthusiasts disheartened. These closures came as a surprise, disrupting the vibrant food scene of the city, known for its diverse culinary expressions and innovative dining experiences.

Big Culinary Names

One of the major hits to the Austin food scene was the sudden closure of Bacalar in July 2024. The downtown Mexican restaurant, run by the executive chef and winner of Top Chef Season 18, Gabe Erales, shut down on July 22. This marked an end to the era of innovative Mexican gastronomy that had beguiled food connoisseurs.

Noteworthy too was the closure of LeRoy & Lewis, the food truck known for their innovative barbecue dishes. After opening their much-anticipated restaurant in February of 2024, the team decided to close down the original food truck, shifting their entire focus onto the full-blown restaurant.

Unforeseen Shutters

The closures included some big names such as Diner Bar and its sister cafe/shop, the Grey Market. Overshadowing the southern culinary scene and cafe culture in Texas, these restaurants abruptly shut their doors on July 14th. These closures were critical due to their pivotal role in bringing Southern cuisines to the forefront.

July 2024 also saw the closure of Salt & Time, a groundbreaking Texan butcher shop and restaurant, which was a major hit to food-lovers. Their pioneering work in the Texan culinary scene and their adjoining wine shop was deeply missed by all Austin food enthusiasts.

Lingering Impact

The impact of these closures has undoubtedly left a void in Austin’s rich and diverse food culture. From beloved food trucks like LeRoy & Lewis to major gastronomic hubs like Diner Bar, the closure of these prominent establishments symbolizes an end of an era for Austin’s culinary scene.

While new eateries continue to sprout in the vibrant cityscape of Austin, the patrons still fondly remember the departed ones, cherishing the culinary conversations experienced there. These establishments were not just mundane food outlets but were emblematic of Austin’s rich food tapestry, binding communities while serving delectable plates.

Looking Ahead

The Austin food community continues to hold onto the hope that the city’s culinary scene will bounce back, carrying forward the legacy of the closed establishments. Even in the face of these sudden closures, Austin remains a hub of culinary innovation and diverse food experiences, making it an irrepressible epicurean destination.
