Austin Energy offers incentives to EV owners to manage summer energy use

Austin Energy introduces Power Partner EV program

In an effort to manage energy consumption during the sweltering summer months, Austin Energy has introduced a program, known as Power Partner EV, offering financial incentives to customers with electric vehicle chargers who voluntarily adjust their energy use.

Assisting with summer energy management

With the Power Partner EV program, Austin Energy can make minor modifications to the charging of enrolled Level 2 electric vehicle (EV) chargers or other eligible vehicle chargers. These alterations will primarily aim to decrease or momentarily halt charging during instances of high power use known as “power partner events.” These events will predominantly occur during the hottest months of the year, from June to September and likely between 2-7 p.m., with a monthly cap of 15 events.

Financial incentives for participation

Austin Energy is further motivating customers by offering a $50 bill credit upon enrolling in the Power Partner EV program. In addition, participants will receive an additional $25 bill credit every year they remain in the program. As an added bonus, customers have the freedom to override any adjustments made during power events and resume charging at their regular levels.

Aligning energy use with renewable energy production

With the city of Austin’s EV footprint continuing to grow—currently boasting more than 42,000 registered EVs along with over 1,600 Level 2 charging stations under Austin Energy’s care—the Power Partner EV program serves as a timely intervention. In addition to enrolling in the program, Austin Energy is also encouraging EV owners to adopt simple practices, such as charging vehicles during evening and overnight hours. This period typically sees lower demand levels and higher renewable energy production levels—such as wind energy.
