AUSTIN – A heart-wrenching story is unfolding for a local family as they search for a couple who has gone missing while traveling through Mexico. Frank Guzman, a dedicated graduate student from the University of Texas at Austin, and his wife, Caroline Katba, had set off on what was meant to be an adventurous road trip, driving from Austin all the way to Chile. Frank is working towards his Ph.D. in cultural anthropology and had plans to conduct fieldwork in Chile, as shared by his sister, Liz Guzman.
Liz described her brother and sister-in-law as “kind, regular people who wanted to explore the world.” The first half of their journey was planned as a leisurely vacation, allowing them to soak in the sights and culture of Mexico. However, as Liz noted, “They had a goal [destination]– there was, and they didn’t reach it.” Tragically, the last communication the families received from Caroline and Frank was on July 22, when they believed the couple was visiting Coatzacoalcos, a bustling city in the state of Veracruz.
The sudden silence since that last message has left both families in a state of deep concern. “Now everyone is extremely confused and desperate to find answers,” Liz expressed. The emotional weight of the situation feels unbearable for her. “I’ve never felt this desperate for anything in my life.” The uncertainty has catalyzed a wave of worries for the families, who just want to know what might have happened to their loved ones.
In their search for answers, Liz has reached out to authorities in both the U.S. and Mexico, but so far, there have not been any leads to help piece together the mystery. “We’re at that point where whatever happened, we will accept the truth for what it is, whether that means that they come home or not. We just want to know what happened,” she said with a haunting sense of resolve.
Amid the distressing situation, Liz made a heartfelt appeal to the community and any individuals who may have information. “I just plead for family and friends to just share, share, share, and get the word over there to Coatzacoalcos,” she urged, hoping that with wider awareness, someone might have seen or heard something about her brother and sister-in-law.
The story of Frank and Caroline has resonated with many in the Austin community as they rally together in hopes of providing support to the Guzman family during this trying time. People understand the importance of community, especially when faced with such uncertainty. As days pass with no news, the families cling to hope while constantly searching for any sign or piece of information that could lead them to their loved ones.
For now, the families remain vigilant and are determined to increase awareness about Frank and Caroline’s disappearance. Their journey from Austin to Chile has turned into a nightmare, and they are committed to uncovering the truth, no matter how hard it may be. Liz and her family continue to ask everyone to keep sharing the message about Frank and Caroline until they can finally bring them home.
As they await answers, the Guzman and Katba families encourage anyone who might have information to step forward. Together, they hope to lift the veil of uncertainty and restore faith that their loved ones will return home safely.
