Sponsor Our ArticlesThe Austin Fire Department swiftly responded to a rescue incident at Lady Bird Lake, where an adult was found clinging to a paddle board in frigid waters. Despite temperatures dipping to 52 degrees Fahrenheit, the skilled swimmers from the AFD successfully brought the individual to safety. Concurrently, a malfunction at Longhorn Dam caused significant drops in lake levels, adding to the day’s challenges. As repairs commence, the community is reminded of the importance of water safety during colder months.
In an event that had locals holding their breath, an adult was rescued from the chilly waters of Lady Bird Lake this past weekend. It all unfolded around 9:30 p.m. Saturday near the iconic I-35 bridge at Ninth Street. The Austin Fire Department (AFD) was quick to respond to calls for help, dispatching skilled swimmers from both Station 1 and Station 6 to brave the cold waters.
As it turns out, the individual in distress was found clinging to a paddle board. Recent reports pointed to the water temperature hovering around a shivery 52 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s chilly enough to send anyone shivering! Interestingly, even when the water warms up to the 70s or 80s, the AFD has cautioned that hypothermia risks can still loom. To add to the drama, the air temperature at the time of the incident was a brisk 48 degrees Fahrenheit.
Once the brave swimmers from AFD reached the scene, they got right to it with their impressive rescue operation. After the adult was safely brought to shore, they were evaluated by the Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (ATCEMS). While the condition of the rescued individual remains unclear, their quick response surely made a difference.
Adding to the day’s challenges, a malfunctioning gate at Longhorn Dam played a significant role in altering the lake’s levels. The gate, which failed in the open position during scheduled maintenance, caused the lake’s water levels to drop by two whole feet! This issue has been causing ripples, quite literally, for both flora and fauna in the beloved lake.
To repair this mishap, crews from Austin Water wasted no time in installing temporary barriers known as stop-logs to seal off the faulty gate. These stop-logs will be in place for several months until permanent fixes can be made. Meanwhile, Austin Water is collaborating with the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) to gradually refill Lady Bird Lake to its normal levels. Plans are in motion to raise the water level by three to four inches per hour, beginning on Wednesday.
In light of the repairs, South Pleasant Valley Road was temporarily closed, but it opened back up Tuesday evening, restoring access for local residents and visitors. The Longhorn Dam, a piece of history constructed in 1960 for the now-closed Holly Power Plant, has had its share of complications. Notably, a similar control system issue arose last October, affecting both the dam and the lake levels, reminding everyone that when it comes to nature, anything can happen!
The events surrounding this weekend’s rescue serve as a potent reminder of the importance of safety when near bodies of water, especially as we transition into the cooler months. As the nights grow longer and temperatures drop, we all need to take precautions, whether we’re paddle boarding on Lady Bird Lake or simply enjoying an evening walk along its scenic shores.
As our community comes together to address the lake’s challenges, we can rest assured knowing that our local heroes are always ready to dive in and help, no matter how cold the waters may get.
