AUSTIN, Texas — A serene Tuesday afternoon took a disastrous turn for residents at the Array Apartments when a fire erupted in the complex, leaving seventeen people without a home. The action-packed scene unfolded on Burton Drive, located close to East Oltorf Street.
Juan Rios was just returning home from a long day at work when he was met with chaos. “I came home and heard a loud explosion,” Rios recounted, his eyes wide with the memory. “When I opened my apartment door, I could already see that my neighbor’s place was engulfed in flames.”
Not one to stand by, Rios rushed to help but faced a grim reality: his fire extinguisher was expired. “I tried to use it, but it didn’t work,” he explained, frustration clear in his voice. Fortunately, it didn’t take long for the professionals to arrive on the scene. Austin Fire Department (AFD) firefighters responded to the emergency call in record time.
Rachael Lewis, spokesperson for AFD, shared that they arrived within seven minutes of the 9-1-1 call. Thanks to their prompt action, the fire flames were knocked down in mere ten minutes. “When we deal with a large, heavy fire, it requires a lot of water, tools, and manpower,” Lewis stated.
The fire reportedly originated on the third floor before rapidly spreading to adjacent units. “The fire burned very hot and very fast,” said Lewis, shedding light on how quickly things escalated. Just as the firefighters began their battle against the flames, the situation was already dire — the fire had reached an adjacent apartment and was still extending.
As firefighters worked to manage the fire, they also managed to save some furry friends. Luckily, two cats and three dogs were rescued safely from the building. While residents may have lost their homes, at least their beloved pets were unharmed, which is a small comfort during such an unsettling ordeal.
With ten units impacted by the fire, the unfortunate reality is that 17 residents now face the challenge of finding new accommodations. Lewis assured that resources are available to help those affected. “The apartment complex is working to relocate residents into empty apartments within the same complex, so they don’t have to leave their neighborhood,” she explained. But with no one allowed back into their homes immediately, the AFD is also collaborating with the Red Cross to make sure those displaced are taken care of for the night.
While the situation has dramatically changed the lives of those at the Array Apartments, the exact cause of the fire is still unclear. Lewis mentioned that it appears to be an accidental incident, though an investigation is ongoing.
As Austin navigates this unfortunate incident, the spirit of community support shines through. Local organizations and neighbors are likely to rally around the affected residents to help them rebuild their lives, because during tough times, that’s what community is all about!
