Austin’s Food Scene Welcomes New Eateries Amid Recent Closures and Special Events

Austin’s Food Scene Experiences Exciting Changes

Austin is buzzing this month with a mix of new openings, closings, and special events in its vibrant food scene. From beloved frozen treats to innovative cuisine, there is a lot happening in the city.

Rita’s Italian Ice Coming to Round Rock

One of the most anticipated announcements is the arrival of Rita’s Italian Ice to the Austin area. Known for its delicious Northeastern-style Italian ices, frozen custards, and gelati, Rita’s is set to open its first location in Round Rock. Located at 3720 Gattis School Road, Suite 200, this new shop will be franchised by Salvatore Raccuglia, who plans to open four more locations in the Austin area. While no specific opening date has been provided as of yet, fans of frozen treats are already excited.

Closure of Li’l Nonna’s Physical Location

In contrast to the good news, there has also been some sadness in the local vegan scene. The popular vegan pizza restaurant Big Nonna’s, part of the Li’l Nonna’s brand, will close its physical location this month. The last day of service at The Crossing at Parmer Lane is scheduled for Sunday, October 13. Owner Rob Lordi expressed his feelings on social media, stating, “we hate to say this for so many reasons, but the time has come for us to join the evergrowing list of former vegan businesses.” However, the food truck, Li’l Nonna’s, will continue to serve the public at Tweedy’s, a North Campus bar, ensuring that fans still have access to their favorite vegan pizzas.

Little Nishi Expands Operations

On a positive note for sushi lovers, Little Nishi has opened a second location this month. The new sushi truck can be found at Armadillo Den, a bar located in far south Austin, as of October 10. Patrons can enjoy the same beloved menu featuring tasty temaki (hand rolls), salads, soups, and entrees like karaage and katsu.

Sixty Vines Makes Its Debut in Austin

This month also saw the opening of Sixty Vines, a Texas restaurant chain, at 3401 Esperanza Crossing in The Domain. Since its opening on October 9, Sixty Vines has attracted foodies with its impressive selection of tapped international wines and a menu that offers New American and American dishes, such as pizza, charcuterie boards, steaks, sandwiches, and desserts for lunch, weekend brunch, and dinner.

Honest Mary’s Opens New Location

Today marks the opening of Honest Mary’s in the Mueller area. This restaurant has garnered attention in the Austin food scene for its fast-casual dining experience. A grand opening celebration is planned for Sunday, October 27, featuring giveaways, free food, live music, and more.

Italian Pop-Up at Birdie’s

Food enthusiasts can also look forward to the return of the Italian pop-up at Birdie’s in the Chestnut neighborhood. This month-long pop-up called Aiello’s will focus on a New York-style red-sauce menu from October 15 to October 19 and again from October 22 to October 26. Diners can expect a prix fixe menu with add-ons, featuring classic dishes like meatballs and various pasta options.

Upcoming Special Dinners

Several exciting special dinners are on the horizon as well. On October 15, Nixta Taqueria will celebrate its fifth anniversary with a six-course meal featuring a collaboration between chef Edgar Rico and New York City chef Chintan Pandya. The dinner will raise funds for the Southern Smoke Foundation and tickets are priced at $100.

Meanwhile, Olamaie, a Southern restaurant in downtown Austin, is hosting a Southern Exposure dinner featuring Boston chef Valentine Howell Jr. on October 13, with tickets available for $150 and an optional wine pairing add-on for $80.

As Austin continues to grow and change, food lovers have much to look forward to, from new dining experiences to innovative culinary events. Keep an eye on the vibrant food scene as it evolves in the coming months.
