February has arrived, and in the beautiful city of Austin, it’s a month rich with history and celebration! This month not only marks the beginning of Black History Month but also a lively celebration of the city’s prominent Black culture through hip-hop events that aim to uplift and represent the community.
One of the most anticipated events this month is the 11th Annual Austin Hip Hop Awards, scheduled to take place on February 22nd. This event has become a staple in the city, shining a spotlight on the rich diversity and talent of Austin’s vibrant hip-hop scene. This year promises to be extra special with a performance from captivating rapper Anastasia Hera, who recently wowed audiences with her hit song “Real Boy” on local television.
As Austin gears up for the awards, some exciting archival work is happening behind the scenes! Miss Manners recently passed a rare MP3 recording of the legendary Cooly Girls—an influential Austin girl group active during the 1980s and 90s—to fellow community radio host Ryan Blake. Blake, who works as an archivist at the Austin History Center, is eagerly expanding the center’s archives on hip-hop culture in anticipation of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary.
Mark your calendars for another fantastic celebration happening in September. The Austin Hip Hop Honors Awards will be held on September 17th at the Central Library. This event is not just about awards; it will feature insightful short interviews with nine key figures in the hip-hop community, broadcast by local film aficionados, the Austin Film Society.
Expect a moving tribute to the late MC Overlord and a nod to KAZI 88.7FM, which has been a cornerstone for hip-hop in Austin. Anastasia Hera will also take on the host role for the honors event, while renowned local artist Kydd Jones will present awards. The talented Pat G & the Justice League are on board to perform, with the lively DJ TJ spinning tracks throughout the celebration.
The Austin History Center has amassed over 20 hours of oral histories since the inception of these archives, encapsulating the energy and spirit of Austin’s hip-hop culture. Among the trailblazers recognized in these archives are Erika Rogers, also known as MzDank, who broke through stereotypes as a female rapper in a male-dominated industry, and Cassanova, who crafted the first local hip-hop album pressed to vinyl back in 1988.
As hip-hop evolves, its importance continues to grow within the city’s artistic landscape. The FLOMOB, formed by Cedrick “Big Ced” and Carnell “Cornbread” Mason, produced the catchy hit “What You Know About That Wood?!” back in 1999, illustrating how Austin’s hip-hop roots have flourished. Tee Double is another vital figure, known for mentoring and producing more than 30 albums, showcasing the passion and dedication within the local scene.
Various grassroots initiatives like Hip Hop Mecca and Jump on It are ensuring that the hip-hop community is about more than just music; they strive to build community and accurately represent cultural narratives. Furthermore, RAS Day, hosted by Riders Against the Storm, acts as a vibrant platform for celebrating Black and brown communities, featuring performances and activities that foster an inclusive space for all.
Since its inception in 2014, RAS Day has grown immensely, attracting big-name talent and deep community involvement. As the month of February unfolds, Austin proves its commitment to honoring its cultural heritage and showcasing the impact of hip-hop on its vibrant community.
