Recently, Barry decided it was time to bring Katz’s back to its roots in Austin. With a stroke of luck, he came across the original location while being forwarded the listing by a childhood friend who is a real estate broker. Barry shared, “We were so lucky. This opportunity came to us,” highlighting how serendipitous it was that the old location became available.
The historic building where Katz’s used to operate was previously owned by WC 6th & Rio, LLC and was sold during an auction at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Austin. The Katz family closed on the property on August 30 of this year, marking an exciting next chapter for the establishment.
New Beginnings with a Twist
Although the legendary Katz’s is returning, it will not be a simple replica of its past self. In collaboration with the Michael Hsu Office of Architecture, the restaurant is expected to strike a balance between honoring its rich history and adapting to the modern Austin vibe. Barry has expressed his intention to “honor what made Austin what it was” while also acknowledging its growth and changes over the years.
Interestingly, Barry confirmed that, like the original location, the new Katz’s will indeed be open 24/7, reaffirming the motto “Katz’s never closes.” “It will absolutely be 24/7… Full stop,” he stated firmly, much to the delight of future patrons looking forward to late-night snacks.
