Austin Welcomes Back Katz’s: A Nostalgic Return After 10 Years

Austin Welcomes Back Katz’s: A Nostalgic Return After 10 Years

This week, Austin residents have a reason to rejoice as the iconic restaurant Katz’s is making a comeback after more than a decade since its closure. Known for its lively atmosphere and delicious New York-style food, Katz’s was a beloved eatery located at 618 West 6th Street and is set to return to its original spot, bringing back memories for many who used to frequent it.

Katz’s first opened its doors in Austin almost 50 years ago, quickly becoming a late-night go-to place for food lovers. With a menu featuring all-day breakfast, sandwiches, fried pickles, and delightful deli-style desserts available 24 hours a day, it became a staple for late-night crowds. The restaurant was also known for its owner, Marc Katz, whose classic yellow Cadillac was a fixture out front.

Despite its motto “Never Kloses,” Katz’s faced tough times and officially closed in 2011 after filing for bankruptcy. At that time, Marc Katz pointed to several challenges, including parking issues and his desire to step away from the restaurant business. This announcement left many fans of Katz’s worried that the eatery would never reopen.

Meanwhile, Marc’s son, Barry Katz, was developing the Katz’s brand in Houston, where he opened the first location in 2000. Over the years, Barry and his wife, Lisa, expanded the brand with several successful locations in Houston. Four restaurants are currently operating, with a fifth planned to open in late 2025 or early 2026.

A Special Opportunity

Recently, Barry decided it was time to bring Katz’s back to its roots in Austin. With a stroke of luck, he came across the original location while being forwarded the listing by a childhood friend who is a real estate broker. Barry shared, “We were so lucky. This opportunity came to us,” highlighting how serendipitous it was that the old location became available.

The historic building where Katz’s used to operate was previously owned by WC 6th & Rio, LLC and was sold during an auction at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Austin. The Katz family closed on the property on August 30 of this year, marking an exciting next chapter for the establishment.

New Beginnings with a Twist

Although the legendary Katz’s is returning, it will not be a simple replica of its past self. In collaboration with the Michael Hsu Office of Architecture, the restaurant is expected to strike a balance between honoring its rich history and adapting to the modern Austin vibe. Barry has expressed his intention to “honor what made Austin what it was” while also acknowledging its growth and changes over the years.

Interestingly, Barry confirmed that, like the original location, the new Katz’s will indeed be open 24/7, reaffirming the motto “Katz’s never closes.” “It will absolutely be 24/7… Full stop,” he stated firmly, much to the delight of future patrons looking forward to late-night snacks.

What to Expect

While an exact opening date for the new Katz’s has not yet been announced, the excitement surrounding its imminent arrival continues to grow. Potential diners can look forward to the same menu favorites that earned Katz’s its place in Austin’s heart, along with new offerings that will cater to an evolving audience.

A New Concept in Morning Dining: Day Maker Half Day Café

Jack Allen’s Kitchen is launching a new concept called Day Maker Half Day Café, projected to bring a dynamic morning experience all week long.

This new café, located at 1101 South Mopac Expy, will offer breakfast, brunch, and lunch options with a twist. Following the success of Jack Allen’s weekend brunch, this new eatery aims to provide a comprehensive dining experience for early risers and casual day-drinkers alike.

With a menu curated by Forrest Briwa, a well-known figure from Jack Allen’s kitchen, Day Maker promises eager guests a mixture of hearty dishes and shareable delights. Expect offerings like a breakfast burger, layered breakfast enchiladas, and sweet treats like churro pancakes.

Community and Connection

The emphasis at Day Maker will be on community and connection, as owners Jack Gilmore and Tom Kamm continue to focus on building relationships with their guests. The café will also feature a “day-drinking party vibe” as well as a walk-up coffee bar to cater to the needs of busy breakfast-goers.

While the opening date for Day Maker has not yet been announced, this addition to Austin’s dining scene is sure to be a hit, following in the footsteps of their beloved predecessors. More details will soon be available via daymakeratx.com.
