AUSTIN — Transportation leaders in Austin are actively collaborating with the federal government to explore financial options for connecting the new light rail system to the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS). The topic came up during a recent mayoral debate, where Mayor Kirk Watson discussed the ongoing efforts to advance the Project Connect program amid ongoing legal challenges and financial hurdles.
Since the Austin City Council, CapMetro, and the Austin Transit Partnership (ATP) adopted the first phase of the city’s light rail initiative in June, the anticipated connection from the rail line to AUS has remained a hot topic. The initial phase includes a 9.8-mile route running from 38th Street to Oltorf Street, extending towards Yellow Jacket Lane and stopping just before the airport.
The uncertainty surrounding when the light rail will officially extend to AUS has prompted many questions from the community. Project Connect officials have flagged this connection as a “priority extension” for the first phase, indicating it will be revisited if additional funding becomes available. Additionally, AUS management has expressed readiness, stating they have preserved the necessary right of way for when the rail line eventually connects to the airport.
In the recent debate, Mayor Watson revealed that discussions are ongoing between AUS, ATP, and federal authorities to expedite this crucial portion of the project. “I’ve worked very closely with the federal government to talk about the fact that we have two major transportation projects that ought to mesh together, and that is the airport and Project Connect and the rail line,” he said. “And I’ve even convened the federal government and our professionals here in Austin to talk about financing mechanisms to be able to connect us to the airport.”
When asked about the outcomes of these discussions, Watson shared that representatives from the Build America Bureau — a division of the U.S. Department of Transportation specializing in financial and technical assistance for transportation infrastructure — have been collaborating with officials from both the airport and Project Connect to explore potential funding solutions.
Watson also underscored the importance of being ready to act on the airport extension as soon as funds are available. At his State of the City address earlier in the week, he tasked ATP with being prepared for this added phase of the light rail project.
A letter from Bill McCamley, executive director of the Austin-based transport advocacy group Transit Forward, surfaced recently, expressing strong support for the light rail initiative. McCamley emphasized the need for improved connectivity in the rapidly growing area, noting that the expansion of AUS alongside the implementation of the light rail indicates a significant step forward for Austin’s transportation infrastructure.
Earlier this year, Project Connect officials announced a targeted construction start date of 2027 for the first phase of the light rail. With an expected operational date for trains set around 2033, the initiative recently entered the Federal Transit Administration’s project development phase. This progression is paving the way for future federal funding allocations to support the project.
The community and transportation stakeholders are hopeful that these ongoing efforts will yield the necessary resources to make the connection between the light rail and the airport a reality. As work continues, the focus remains on ensuring that Austin’s infrastructure keeps pace with its expanding population and mobility needs.
