Visual representation of the proposed light rail system in Austin showcasing the urban greenway and plaza.
Austin’s Mobility Committee has announced new developments regarding the light rail project aimed at enhancing public transportation. Key features include a tree-lined greenway along East Riverside Drive, a car-free zone at the University of Texas campus, and a plaza at the Oltorf stop. While the project budget has increased significantly, plans remain on track for phase one, which will include 15 stops over 9.8 miles. Construction is slated to begin no earlier than 2027, with the potential for local job creation and improved community connectivity.
Austin, Texas—our lovely city known for its vibrant culture, bustling music scene, and delicious food, is gearing up for some significant changes in public transportation! The Austin Mobility Committee recently met to discuss the much-anticipated light rail project, and they brought some buzzing plans to the table that have everyone talking.
During the committee meeting on February 20, a proposal was unveiled that includes some riveting aspects aimed at enhancing pedestrian experience along the new light rail system. Hold on to your hats, folks, because these features sound fantastic!
The Oltorf stop is designated as the southern end-of-line for phase one of this ambitious project, and with these new features, it looks like getting around town is about to get a lot more pleasant.
Now, let’s talk about some changes on the horizon! The Austin Transit Partnership (ATP) is proposing to cancel the Travis Heights stop and replace it with a new stop at Wooldridge Square downtown. Oh, and Montopolis will also see a few adjustments, plus some tweaks to the Waterfront station near Lady Bird Lake.
This whole light rail venture isn’t just some wild idea—it’s grounded in the original plan approved by voters through Proposition A in 2020. However, the budget has, let’s say, taken a wild ride! What started as an estimated cost of around $5 billion has now ballooned to a staggering over $7 billion, thanks to inflation and the far-reaching impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.
So, where’s the cash coming from? A combination of presumed federal financing and city bonds will help foot the bill, along with a 21 percent property tax increase that was approved with Proposition A. The community is coming together to make this dream a reality, despite some legal challenges from local stakeholders questioning the ATP’s funding authority.
If everything goes smoothly (fingers crossed for no legal hiccups!), phase one of the rail project will boast 15 stops and stretch an impressive 9.8 miles. But before we can hop on the train, hold your horses! Construction is not expected to kick off any earlier than 2027.
While we wait for construction to begin, the ATP has hosted events aimed at engaging local businesses interested in potential construction contracts. This means thousands of local jobs could be on the horizon, shaking up our community for the better!
New renderings have been shared along with a draft environmental impact statement, giving us a glimpse into the future of public transit in Austin. This project is part of a larger initiative, dubbed Project Connect, which aims to enhance transit options throughout Central Texas.
As we get more updates about this exciting venture, we can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation for the enhanced connectivity, sustainability, and accessibility that this light rail project promises to bring. Here’s to a future filled with better transportation options in our beloved city of Austin!
