An Austin man, who faced charges in a gruesome double murder that took place in 2022, has been found guilty and conveyed a cumulative sentence of 110 years in prison. After an intense deliberation on May 24, 2024, the Travis County jury bestowed its guilty verdict to Yong Yoon Kim, 33, attributed with two counts of murder.
The trial proceedings took off on May 20, 2024. Barely five days into the trial, the jury reached a verdict. Yong Yoon Kim had been charged with two counts of murder in the twisted saga that shocked Austin in 2022. In the case’s shocking turn, the jury lawyered its judgment on May 29, coming down hard on Kim with 50 years for the first murder charge and another 60 for the second. The sentences will run concurrently, effectively imposing a 110-year sentence upon Kim.
Kim was initially arrested on January 23, 2022, in connection with the heinous murders of Christopher Rivers, 38, and Nathan Limoge, 28. The killings took place in the 7700 block of Burnet Road in Central Austin. Following the arrest, Kim was reindicted amidst preparations for the impending double murder trial on August 15, 2022.
The ghastly case had its first round of trial on the week of September 18, 2023, but the proceedings arrived at an impasse with a hung jury. With no foreseeable resolution in sight, the case was set for a re-trial. The retrial led to the now-decisive 110-year sentence that Kim will serve concurrently.
The aftermath of the verdict has left the city of Austin in subdued disarray. Once a name buried in the criminal justice system, Yong Yoon Kim will now be remembered as a grim testament to the city’s battle against violent crime. This verdict, borne out of one of Travis County’s most gripping and acrimonious trials, has set the tone for a renewed resolve within the city’s law enforcement and judiciary system.
