Austin is reeling after the recent arrest of an 18-year-old in connection with a troubling homicide that left a young man dead in southeast Austin. The suspect, identified as Stephon Martin Morson, finds himself at the center of an investigation shedding light on an alarming event that unfolded on October 16.
It was a chilling night when the Austin Police Department responded to a frantic call at around 10:33 PM in the 2100 block of Burton Drive. Upon arrival, officers discovered a young man, later revealed to be 20-year-old Keshawn Cage, suffering from a severe gunshot wound to the head. Sadly, he was pronounced dead just moments later at 10:57 PM, and the tragedy sent shockwaves through the community.
The following day, police were called to an apartment complex close to the murder scene when an employee stumbled upon a few intriguing findings: a hoodie, a pair of Yeezy shoes, and a handgun discarded in a nearby dumpster. Officers collected that Nike hoodie and the shoes, only to discover blood on the clothing items. Meanwhile, the handgun was located in the parking lot, raising critical questions.
CCTV footage from the area painted a clearer picture of what transpired. Investigators confirmed that Morson was spotted wearing the same hoodie and shoes that were found shortly after the shooting. But that wasn’t all; an eyewitness came forward, claiming they witnessed Morson pull the trigger that killed Cage. It turns out that Morson and Cage had known each other, which added a personal twist to the case.
According to court documents, the motive behind this shocking act seemed to stem from a previous incident. A separate disturbance on August 31 had stirred tensions between Morson and Cage. A person believed to be Morson’s roommate was arrested in connection with that earlier shooting incident, and Morson was convinced that Cage had “cooperated with law enforcement” leading to that arrest. Allegedly, Morson confronted Cage, accusing him of being a “snitch,” which may have escalated into the devastating events that night in October.
In the days following the murder, Morson caught the attention of police once more. On October 17, investigators reached out to him, but he initially denied any involvement. However, as the evidence piled up, including bloody footprints leading from the crime scene, Morson’s denial began to crumble. By the time he spoke with the APD Homicide unit, he admitted to being in the area but claimed he only heard the gunshot and had no knowledge of who fired it.
On October 21, after mounting evidence and further questioning, Morson was arrested for tampering with physical evidence. The unfolding story has established a web of accusations, evidence, and heartache, leaving the community questioning how such violence can occur among individuals who had a prior relationship.
The case remains active, and as investigations continue, residents are left with a sense of unease. This harrowing incident underscores the need for a dialogue about youth violence and community safety. The community is left hoping for justice to be served as this tragic story unfolds.
