AUSTIN, Texas – A murder suspect connected to a cold case from 2021 has once again been taken into custody after being briefly released on bond. Mithovar Antoine Jr., a 22-year-old man, was arrested in Temple on September 12, 2024, when the U.S. Marshal’s Office issued a warrant for his arrest on first-degree murder charges. The arrest stems from the stabbing death of Nikolas Martinez, who was just 23 years old when he was killed in South Austin on July 23, 2021.
Following his arrest, Antoine was taken to the Bell County Jail, and surprisingly, he was able to bond out only four days later. His bond was set at $150,000 with no specific conditions, a decision that has raised eyebrows among law enforcement. Detective Richard Spitler from the Austin Police Department expressed his disbelief at such a low bond for a murder case, noting that typically, bonds for murder charges can be as high as $1 million.
“I was surprised as well. I believe a lot of other people did,” said Detective Spitler regarding the situation. “You know, this was a $150,000 bond.”
Despite being expected to be extradited to the Travis County Jail, Antoine’s quick release led to confusion and negotiations among various law enforcement agencies about the next steps. According to Gene Anthes, a local attorney and managing partner for the GBA law firm, there have been instances where law enforcement actively reaches out to the District Attorney’s office to inform them about individuals on probation prior to their release. He highlighted the importance of prompt action in such cases to avoid further legal complications.
On September 24, 2024, Antoine was placed back in police custody. He now faces new charges, including capital murder by terroristic threat. On his return to jail, his bond was set at a staggering $10 million. This latest development adds to the complexity of his ongoing legal troubles, and officials are still investigating the connections between the new charges and the death of Nikolas Martinez.
Inquiries have been made to the Travis County District Attorney’s Office to confirm if the new charges relate to Martinez’s murder, but a response is still pending. The situation remains fluid, and developments continue to unfold.
As the legal process continues, the Austin community waits for answers in this tragic case. With ongoing discussions among law enforcement, legal professionals, and community members, it is clear that the case against Mithovar Antoine Jr. is far from over. What started as a cold case is now back in the spotlight, and authorities are determined to seek justice for the victim and his family.
Updates will be provided as more information becomes available. The cases like these remind all of us of the importance of vigilance in our communities and the complexities that often arise within the legal system.
