Austin Readies for New Train Tracks Along the Red Line
AUSTIN, Texas — Capital Metro is getting set to enhance transportation in East Austin with plans for a second set of train tracks along the Red Line. This project is expected to significantly improve train service for residents and visitors alike.
Expanding the Red Line
The new tracks will be situated at the Plaza Saltillo Station and will stretch from east of Robert T. Martinez Street to Onion Street, covering a distance of about seven blocks. This addition aims to enable trains to travel more frequently and consistently, as trains will be able to run in both directions at the same time. The transportation agency, CapMetro, believes that these changes will make a noticeable difference in the rail service experience for passengers.
New Features on the Horizon
Along with the double-tracking, CapMetro is also planning to introduce new sidewalks and pedestrian crossings in the area, making it easier and safer for people to access the train station. An additional platform will also be constructed to accommodate the anticipated rise in passenger numbers due to improved service.”This project aligns with our commitment to making public transportation an attractive option for everyone in Austin,” a spokesperson for CapMetro said.
Building on Past Success
This double-tracking approach is not new for CapMetro. A similar project was just completed last year between the Lakeline and Leander stations as part of the ongoing Project Connect expansion initiative. The success of this previous project has set a positive tone for the forthcoming improvements along the Red Line.
Funding the New Tracks
The total cost for the project is estimated at $32.2 million. Remarkably, more than half of this cost will be covered by federal funding. The U.S. Department of Transportation has granted CapMetro $18 million to support the initiative. In addition, the city of Austin is contributing around $900,000, which will finance some necessary street upgrades, including sidewalks and pedestrian crossings that will enhance local access to the transit system.
Timeline for Development
The project is still in the early stages. Designs for the new tracks are expected to be developed during the coming year, with construction likely commencing in 2026. This timeline gives residents time to prepare for changes in the area and how they utilize train services in the future.
