Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) celebrated the grand opening of its new animal hospital on April 12. This facility, situated off U.S. 290 and Brodie Lane, marks a significant upgrade from APA!’s previous 75-year-old hospital, which was increasingly cramped and difficult for medical staff to operate within. The new site promises to enhance the hospital’s ability to provide critical medical care to animals in its shelter.
The primary beneficiaries of the new hospital are the animals in the care of APA!. The facility will allow for improved medical services, accommodating a higher volume of surgeries and medical treatments for rescue animals. Additionally, the enhanced resources and conditions of the new building provide a better working environment for the dedicated staff and volunteers who care for these animals.
The new hospital has been designed for better functionality and efficiency, allowing for a range of medical procedures that were not possible in the old facility. It will house various medical programs, including specialized surgeries, an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and facilities for housing both dogs and cats. Improved infrastructure includes better air quality, lighting, and spacious areas for treatment, thus facilitating more effective care and reducing the spread of disease among the shelter animals.
APA! performs between 10 to 40 surgeries and sees 20 to 40 patients daily. The previous hospital conditions limited staff’s ability to operate effectively. The new space significantly improves the separation and isolation of different species, which is critical in preventing the spread of illness among animals. Furthermore, APA! has observed a 20% annual increase in animal intake over the last three years, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced medical facilities.
The development of the new animal hospital has been funded through community donations and adoption fees. APA! is actively seeking additional equipment donations through an Amazon wishlist to help outfit the hospital further. This support showcases the community’s commitment to improving animal welfare and the shelter’s capacity to care for more animals.
Currently, the new hospital is closed to the public and will only serve animals within the shelter’s care. The main adoption center remains at the APA! location on Cesar Chavez. Although there have been construction delays that have postponed the hospital’s operational start, there are hopes that the facility will open by the end of April or early May. In addition to the new hospital, APA! has also constructed a new transport hub in Elgin that can house 100 dogs, effectively doubling previous capacity for animal transport and care.
The opening of the new animal hospital is expected to streamline operations within APA!, allowing staff and volunteers to work more effectively with the resources available. This upgraded facility not only addresses current limitations but also prepares APA! for future challenges in animal rescue and care.
