AUSTIN — The Austin Police Department (APD) announced the arrest of a 24-year-old man on Tuesday linked to a series of incidents involving deadly conduct that began back in July. The suspect, identified as Oscar Casillas, faces multiple charges related to a number of shootings that took place in east Austin.
The troubling events unfolded between July 14 and July 30, 2024, with several shootings specifically aimed at a residence located in the 2900 block of Lyons Road. According to police reports, these incidents typically occurred during the late night and early morning hours, raising concerns among local residents.
Community safety is a top priority for local law enforcement, and the APD has made it clear that they are taking these shootings very seriously. In total, Casillas has been charged with six felony counts of deadly conduct for discharging a firearm. This highlights the potentially dangerous nature of these incidents and the risks posed to the residents living in the area.
Following a significant police response to one of the incidents on August 30, investigators were able to identify a person of interest as well as a possible suspect vehicle. These leads were crucial in helping the police build their case against Casillas. After being arrested, records from the Travis County jail show that he had been released on bond as of Wednesday, which is raising questions about his current status in the community.
The investigation into these shootings is still active, with the Aggravated Assault Unit and the Gang Unit of the APD continuing to probe the case. The authorities are appealing to the public for assistance. Anyone who has information related to the incidents is encouraged to submit tips anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program. This can be done either by visiting their website or by calling their tip line. There is even a reward of up to $1,000 available for information that leads to additional arrests.
Residents in the east Austin neighborhood have expressed concern about the rise in gun-related incidents. The police’s proactive approach to apprehending suspects and seeking community assistance is reassuring to many. Community members are also being urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help maintain safety in their neighborhoods.
As the investigation proceeds, the APD is committed to keeping the public informed about developments in this case. The goal remains clear: to ensure that the community is safe and that those who commit violent acts are held accountable for their actions. The Austin Police Department encourages everyone to work together to create a safer environment.
