AUSTIN, Texas — On Monday, the Austin Police Department (APD) shared encouraging updates about the recently installed automated license plate readers throughout the city. Since late March, the city has been progressively setting up 40 fixed cameras at various locations, completing the installation process in August. At a Public Safety meeting, officials expressed positivity over the way these systems have contributed to law enforcement efforts. The department disclosed that the license plate readers have played a key role in solving crimes:

• Aiding in the arrest or identification of two murder suspects.
• Leading to the arrest of 40 individuals for stolen vehicles.

An APD representative explained, “That will give us the ability, per the resolution, to be able to run the software in the car. So as you’re driving down the road, the camera’s officer doesn’t have to do anything. The Axon system automatically reads everything and puts it in the database.”
