Austin is set for significant changes to its public transportation system starting March 2025, including the replacement of the CapMetro app with the Umo Mobility app, the introduction of Reloadable Fare Cards, and a new tap-to-pay system. These updates aim to enhance convenience for riders while considering the impact on lower-income individuals and minority communities. Public engagement meetings will be held to discuss these transitions.
Hey there, Austin! If you rely on CapMetro for getting around town, you’re in for some exciting updates starting in March 2025. That’s right! We’re talking about a comprehensive overhaul of the public transportation system that promises to make things a lot easier and more convenient for riders.
First things first, the beloved CapMetro app is going away in March 2025. Don’t worry, though! There’s a new kid on the block called the Umo Mobility app. This new app will take over all your payment needs, while the Transit app will help you plan and track your rides. It’s all about keeping things modern and user-friendly!
Starting in February 2025, riders will get to use Reloadable Fare Cards. These cards are designed to make travel smoother because you can preload them with cash and use them to hop on and off the bus or train. If you’ve been using the plastic cards tied to the Travis County Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) or AMP cards, make sure to exchange those for the new Reloadable Fare Cards!
Now, here’s a little heads-up: online week and month-long passes are being eliminated. But, don’t panic! You will still be able to keep those paper cards that come with a black stripe, which will still be valid for travel.
CapMetro is also introducing a modern tap-to-pay system, making it even easier to pay for rides. The new validators will accept payments from Apple Pay, Google Pay, and good ol’ credit/debit cards. However, note that old-school plastic payment cards won’t be accepted in this new system, so be mindful when planning how to pay!
Want to add some cash to your Reloadable Fare Card or your Umo app? No problem! You can easily load up your fare card at designated retailers across the city. It’s a simple way to keep your travel game strong without any hassle!
CapMetro isn’t just making these changes without considering how they might affect everyone. The proposed updates will be carefully analyzed to see their potential impacts on lower-income individuals and minority communities. It’s important for CapMetro to ensure that the changes benefit as many riders as possible.
Feeling curious or have questions about the changes? There are several public engagement meetings lined up for you! An online discussion will take place on January 7 at 5:30 p.m. If you prefer to meet in person, swing by the Rose Parks Boardroom on January 14 at 5:30 p.m. There’s also a hearing on January 15 at noon in the same location. This is your chance to share your thoughts and learn more about what’s coming.
So, Austin, get ready as CapMetro gears up for these transformative changes to the public transportation system. With the new apps, Reloadable Fare Cards, and an improved payment process, commuting around the city will soon be a breeze! Stay tuned for all the latest updates, and let’s welcome this exciting new chapter together!
