In Austin, Texas, the heartbeat of music pulsed stronger than ever as collectors, artists and enthusiasts swarmed the city for the grand fencing feast of music that was the Austin Record Convention. Towering over any regular music industry gouge or record store lifeline, the event converted the allure of Record Store Day into a mere kindergarten birthday celebration.
Boasting over 300 dealers and consuming 40,000 square feet of a prime local ballroom, the convention embodied the mystical city of the Aztecs’ long lost city of gold, El Dorado. The expanse presented an overabundance of items – new, used and vintage vinyl to name a few – rivaled only by the world’s most expansive libraries. CDs, cassettes, posters, T-shirts and a myriad of other music-related pop culture delivery formats also rose from tables, booths, and floor boxes, presenting an image akin to the treasures of Tutankhamun.
The convention, beyond being a hub for music collectors, also operated as a marketplace for music lovers. On offer were early shopper tickets at $30, granting an extra day on Friday and early admission on Saturday and Sunday. This was not only a convention but also a festival, a celebration of our love for music and the art that surrounds it.
Around the convention were numerous food stalls and joints, adding an extra layer of satisfaction for the attendees. From scrumptious Tex-Mex delicacies at El Alma Cafe y Cantina to mouth-watering barbecue at Terry Black’s Barbecue, food options were in no shortage. Attendees could also enjoy a range of burgers, ice creams, and more from various local joints.
In addition to hosting this incredible convention, the city of Austin was also a host for other intriguing events. These ranged from a risqué event named A Blasphemous Unbaptism to a fitness motivation with the name Road to Leadville 100: Sí Se Puede and even different artsy events like Doc Days 2024 and the Blue Genie May Market.
The Austin Record Convention served as a spotlight illuminating the city’s rich cultural diversity, making Austin more than just a city, but a world for music lovers, artists, food enthusiasts, and event-goers.
