Austin Residents Eager for Opening of New H-E-B Store Amid Speculation

Austin Residents Await New H-E-B Store Opening

AUSTIN — Residents of Austin are eagerly waiting for the opening of H-E-B’s new store on South Congress Avenue. Although excitement is building, there is still no official grand opening date set, contrary to rumors circulating on social media this week. A post in an Austin subreddit claimed the store would open its doors on December 17, but H-E-B has confirmed that this date is not accurate.

In an official email, a spokesperson from H-E-B stated that they have not yet finalized the opening date for the South Congress location. The spokesperson went on to say that the store is still under construction, and that they expect to provide “a more concrete timeline” in the upcoming months regarding the opening.

Background on the New Store

The new H-E-B store will replace the long-standing location at 2400 S. Congress Ave., which first opened its doors in 1957. The decision to demolish and rebuild was announced back in December 2021. Following the announcement, demolition work began in February 2022 to clear the site for the new building. While this process was underway, H-E-B opened a temporary store nearby at the Twin Oaks Shopping Center to continue serving their customers in the area.

The South Congress location is set to be much bigger and offer more amenities compared to its predecessor. When completed, the new multi-leveled store will be over 145,000 square feet. H-E-B plans to include both indoor and outdoor dining spaces, giving customers the option to enjoy meals on-site. In addition, the store will feature Texas barbecue, highlighting local cuisine and offering a unique experience for shoppers.

Community Response

The anticipation surrounding the new H-E-B store is palpable among Austin residents. Many longtime customers have fond memories of shopping at the original location. The impending opening of the new store is seen as a welcome development, especially given H-E-B’s reputation for quality products and community involvement.

Residents have expressed excitement about the new features the store will offer. The combination of groceries and dining options adds a fresh twist to the typical shopping experience, allowing people to enjoy a meal while they shop or take a break from their day.

What’s Next?

As construction continues, H-E-B officials are focused on ensuring the new store meets the needs of the community. They remain committed to providing updates to the public as progress is made. In the meantime, customers in the area are encouraged to visit the temporary store at Twin Oaks Shopping Center to continue their shopping until the new location opens.

With many families and individuals eager for the grand opening, the news of the unconfirmed dates hasn’t dampened spirits. Instead, it has built anticipation for what is expected to be a major addition to the South Congress area. Austin’s residents will be keeping a close eye on announcements from H-E-B in the coming months, hoping for news of the grand opening.
