Austin, the capital of Texas and a hub of vibrant culture, is buzzing with excitement as it rolls out the red carpet for The Kitchen, a restaurant from none other than Kimbal Musk—the brother of tech billionaire Elon Musk. This new upscale farm-to-table eatery is making its grand debut in the heart of the city, marking a significant expansion from its original home in Boulder, Colorado, where it opened its doors in 2004.
Kimbal Musk has always had an eye on Texas, especially Austin, due to its playful “Keep it weird” vibe which resonates well with Boulder. During an interview, he shared that he feels the strong connection between the two cities, and he viewed Austin’s growing reputation as a culinary destination as the perfect opportunity for his latest venture. In fact, in May 2020, Kimbal polled his team to determine the best city for expansion, and guess who topped the list? You got it—Austin!
Kimbal took center stage at the opening festivities, boasting about how The Kitchen was a pioneer in the farm-to-table movement. “We started this whole farm-to-table thing ten years ago,” he exclaimed, highlighting that while there are many great eateries in Austin, The Kitchen is distinct with its creative twists on classic dishes.
Situated in the stunning new skyscraper at 400 W. Sixth St., the restaurant seats up to 211 guests in its spacious 8,300-square-foot space. Guests can look forward to a menu put together by Chef Michael Bertozzi, who brings a global perspective to the table, boasting influences from his early years spent in Lima, Peru, and Jacksonville, Florida. “I pull flavor inspirations from places like Peru, Morocco, and Japan,” Bertozzi expressed, indicating that diners are in for a delightful surprise with each bite.
Chef Bertozzi’s remarkable culinary creations have already made quite an impression during the restaurant’s opening party. From delectable yellowtail bites and crispy falafel to buttery lobster rolls and the mouthwatering steak tartare, the menu promises a flood of unique flavors. But the true show-stopper? The perfectly cooked Denver steak, which surely left an unforgettable mark on the taste buds of attendees.
For those who enjoy a refreshing drink, The Kitchen’s bartenders showcased their expertise through innovative cocktails. Picture indulging in a sparkling blackberry spritz or a twist on the classic ranch water, made with Topo Chico sparkling water and grapefruit juice. Mouth watering yet?
Don’t worry about getting stuck in a routine; The Kitchen will continually refresh its offerings with a seasonal menu. And most plates are designed for sharing, encouraging a social dining experience. Price ranges from an affordable $12 all the way to $280, so there’s something for everyone, regardless of budget.
The ambiance at The Kitchen is as noteworthy as the cuisine. Designed by local architects, the dining area beautifully blends cream and gold accents with sturdy blue elements, drawing the gaze upward to admire three stunning triangular chandeliers created by lighting artist Jen Lewin. For those who prefer a more intimate setting, there’s an exclusive private dining room that features rich velvet booths paired with cowboy hats adorning the walls.
Eager to try the latest culinary hotspot? The Kitchen is already accepting reservations ahead of its official opening on **November 14**. While it currently opens at 4 p.m. daily, there’s talk of expanding hours to include lunch and brunch in the future. If you want to be part of Austin’s vibrant dining scene, this is your chance!
