AUSTIN — Gabriela Bucio, a vibrant business owner and proud Latina, has been spreading her Mexican culture throughout Austin since she opened her first restaurant, Gabrielas Downtown, back in 2018. Bucio, who moved to the United States from Michoacán, Mexico at the young age of five, has turned her dream of sharing her roots into an impressive business empire.
In a recent interview, Bucio shared her journey of entrepreneurship. “I am first generation here, I don’t come from money. I don’t have generational wealth. I started my business with whatever I could,” she said. Initially, Bucio did not foresee the tremendous success that awaited her. “When I opened Gabrielas Downtown, I just wanted to work with my family and maybe make a living. I didn’t think we would own so many,” she added.
Bucio’s ambition didn’t stop at just one restaurant. After experiencing success, she expanded her business ventures into various types of restaurants and even the entertainment sector. “I now have two Gabrielas. I have the super ‘Instagramable’ all-pink restaurant, Taquero Mucho. I have two of those. I have a coffee shop, a churro shop, five nightclubs — we are in Houston also — and Seareinitas, a seafood restaurant. So, I have about five nightclubs and seven to eight restaurants, and I started five years ago,” Bucio said.
Walking into one of Bucio’s establishments, such as La Seareinita, customers are greeted with a welcoming Hispanic feminine vibe. Bucio explained, “It’s a seafood spot and usually it would be like a captain or a pirate but, I wanted it to be super feminine energy. Our clubs and most of our businesses are run by a woman. We put the girls in charge.”
The menus in Bucio’s restaurants reflect her fond childhood memories, full of family recipes. “My brother Arturo is the one in charge of the kitchens. A lot of them are inspired by dishes that we grew up eating and it is just a lot of home recipes,” she explained.
Today, Gabriela Bucio oversees a flourishing business that employs over 600 people and includes a private social media and marketing firm. Despite her soaring success, Bucio noted that the road has not always been easy. “Some people do try to discredit me just because I am a woman of color,” she said candidly.
However, Bucio remains undeterred and takes great pride in her background. “I am super proud to be a Latina. I am super proud to be Mexican,” she declared with enthusiasm.
Looking ahead, Bucio emphasizes her love for her work and her vision for the future. “I can work all day, you know, I am at home thinking about work, it is just really fun for me. I feel like I could be doing more honestly. I am really proud of everyone that helps us, everyone that supports us, and I am really grateful,” she shared.
Gabriela Bucio represents an inspiring story of hard work, determination, and cultural pride. Her journey from a humble beginning to a thriving business owner in Austin showcases not only her entrepreneurial spirit but also the rich tapestry of Mexican culture that she passionately shares with her community.
