Austin Community in Shock After Elderly Couple Found Dead in Double Homicide Case

Austin Residents React to Shocking Double Homicide Case

AUSTIN — A recent incident in south Austin has left the community in shock as details emerge regarding the tragic deaths of a beloved elderly couple, Tony Maxa, 76, and his wife, Shari Maxa, 74. The couple was found dead in their home on Brookhill Drive on September 21, and their grandson, Chevy Kyler Monaghan, is currently facing serious allegations related to their deaths.

Background of the Incident

According to the arrest affidavit, police were called to perform a welfare check on the couple after a family member expressed concerns about Monaghan’s behavior. They reported that Monaghan was “unstable” and feared that he “might hurt them.” Family members had been trying to contact the couple but were unsuccessful.

When police officers arrived at the scene, they found Monaghan outside, acting casually as he put items into his grandmother’s car. Reports indicate that Monaghan, rather nonchalantly, sat down, lit a marijuana cigarette, and opened a soda can while speaking to the officers. He claimed that his grandparents were inside but did not mention that they were deceased.

Discoveries Inside the Home

Upon entering the home, officers made a grim discovery: both Tony and Shari were found dead. The couple’s bedroom was ransacked, and Monaghan had ammunition in his pockets along with some of his grandmother’s jewelry and prescriptions. In the car where Monaghan was seen taking belongings from the house, police found even more jewelry, blank checks, and additional ammunition.

As the investigation continued, an autopsy revealed that Shari had been shot three times while Tony suffered six gunshot wounds. According to the coroner, Tony’s wounds indicated that he had been shot from less than three feet away. This tragic event is being noted as Austin’s 44th and 45th homicide of the year.

Community Mourning

The couple’s family has expressed deep sorrow over the loss, sharing that Tony and Shari were irreplaceable to many, especially their grandchildren. In a heartfelt statement to the public, the family described Shari as “everyone’s person” and said that “together, there was nothing they couldn’t or wouldn’t do for their family or friends.” They emphasized the unique, loving bond that the grandparents shared with their grandchildren and the lasting impact they had on everyone around them.

“We will never stop missing them, and we will never be completely whole again without them,” the family stated. They also requested that people join them in remembering the couple and supporting those who are mourning this unimaginable loss.

Upcoming Vigil and Funeral Services

A vigil for the Maxas is planned for Saturday, September 30, at Garrison Park, located at 6001 Manchaca Road in Austin. The community is invited to gather and pay their respects at 7 p.m. An online notice has confirmed that the couple’s funeral will take place on October 3.

Legal Proceedings

Monaghan has been arrested and is facing a capital murder charge. The police report indicates that the gun used in the shooting was purchased by Monaghan from a pawn shop in Austin just a few months prior, on July 4. KXAN has reached out to Monaghan’s attorney for a statement regarding the case.

This horrifying event has raised many questions within the Austin community, further emphasizing the need for mental health support and awareness. As the investigation unfolds, residents are left grappling with the unexpected loss of a cherished couple and the impact it has had on their family and friends.
