Austin Welcomes New Police Chief Lisa Davis
AUSTIN, Texas — The City of Austin officially swore in its new Police Chief Lisa Davis during a ceremony held at City Hall this morning. With this significant event, Davis has become the 11th police chief in the history of the Austin Police Department (APD). Her swearing-in marks another milestone as she is the department’s second woman to ever hold the position permanently.
Vision for Change and Community Engagement
In her inaugural address, Davis shared her ambitious vision for the future of the APD. She emphasized her intent to examine current police practices critically and implement changes that foster a stronger relationship with the community. “We’re going to get some great things done here,” she stated optimistically.
Having officially stepped into her role a month ago, Davis reflects on making a significant impact within the community and the department. She acknowledged the challenges faced in recent years, particularly referencing the events of 2020, including the murder of George Floyd, which ignited widespread discussions about police accountability.
Addressing the Past and Moving Forward
Davis understands that the road ahead is complex. “After 2020 and the George Floyd and all the reckoning that had to take place, and believe me, it’s not perfect, It’s not perfect. We need to do better,” she stated, highlighting the importance of police accountability and action in rebuilding trust with the community.
Additionally, when asked about the recent trial and conviction of former Austin Police Officer Christopher Taylor, who was involved in a controversial incident, Davis acknowledged the concern it has caused among both officers and the community. “It’s unsettling to the officers. It’s unsettling to the community. It’s a big deal to them, and they want to hear the support. They want to hear how we move beyond that,” she noted.
Support from City Leaders
The ceremony was attended by key city leaders including Austin City Manager TC Broadnax and Austin Mayor Kirk Watson. Mayor Watson expressed his confidence in Davis as the right leader to guide the department through this transformative period. “While we count on you, we have confidence that you are the leader we need to move us forward,” he said during his remarks.
Encouraging New Officers
In her address, Davis extended an open invitation to potential recruits considering a career in law enforcement. “Come be part of the change here,” she urged, calling on new hires to participate in the evolving landscape of policing in Austin.
As part of her efforts to enhance cooperation and understanding between the APD and the local government, Davis has initiated regular meetings with local leaders, including Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza. She has expressed a commitment to meet monthly with Garza to ensure ongoing discussions about public safety and accountability.
Looking Ahead
With Lisa Davis at the helm, many in the Austin community are hopeful for a new beginning for the police department. Her approach prioritizes accountability, community engagement, and a thoughtful examination of past practices. As she steps into this vital role, the city looks forward to the potential improvements that may arise during her leadership.
The residents of Austin are eager to see how these changes will unfold and how the APD can better serve the community in the years to come.
