Austin, Texas – Fatal Hit-and-Run Incident Leads to Arrest

In a tragic incident that occurred on Thursday night, a 34-year-old woman has been taken into custody in connection with a fatal hit-and-run collision. The incident took place around 10:08 p.m. in the 3400 block of South Congress Avenue, where a pedestrian was struck while crossing the street.

Details of the Incident

The victim, identified as Tony Almanza, was found unconscious in the center turn lane and suffered a severe head injury. First responders rushed to the scene and made efforts to save his life, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead less than an hour later at 11:06 p.m. at South Austin Hospital.

Witnesses who were nearby reported seeing a white Jeep Cherokee stop momentarily at the scene, but then it drove off shortly after. This led to a search by the Texas Department of Public Safety troopers who later located a vehicle matching the description on Oltorf Street.

Arrest of Julie K. Kotrla

The driver of the vehicle, Julie K. Kotrla, has been charged with Collision Causing Death. According to an affidavit filed by the Austin Police Department, Kotrla confessed to having hit what she thought was a person while heading north on South Congress Avenue. She mentioned that she stopped her vehicle but did not see anyone and mistakenly believed the pedestrian had “skedaddled.”

Investigation Insights

Detective Foster, from the Austin Police Department’s Vehicular Homicide unit, emphasized that Kotrla’s vehicle displayed damage indicative of a crash involving a pedestrian, including issues with the hood and windshield. Furthermore, Kotrla did not check to see if anyone was injured or contact emergency services before leaving the scene, actions which violate the Texas Transportation Code requirements for drivers involved in accidents.

Kotrla claimed she intended to report the incident upon her return home, citing a lack of phone service. However, Detective Foster pointed out that all cellular phones can dial 911, regardless of the service status, casting doubt on her statement.

Ongoing Investigation

The investigation by the Austin Police Department is still ongoing, and authorities are actively seeking any additional information pertaining to this tragic event. They encourage anyone who may have seen what happened or has relevant details to contact the department.

As the community mourns the loss of Tony Almanza, residents are reminded of the importance of road safety and the responsibilities that come with driving. This incident serves as a tragic reminder of the potential consequences of impaired judgment and the need for drivers to remain vigilant.

This heart-wrenching case highlights the risks of hit-and-run incidents and the profound impact they have on families and communities. Authorities are committed to uncovering the full circumstances surrounding this case and providing justice for the victim.
