Austin, Texas Prepares for Cooler Weather this Weekend

This summer in Austin has been enjoyable, with the heat not feeling as intense as it did last year. However, the warm summer days are still with us, and residents are ready for a change. Excitingly, global weather forecasts indicate a shift towards cooler overnight temperatures just in time for the first weekend of September.

Cool Front Around the Corner

Starting Sunday morning, a weak cold front is expected to sweep through the area, bringing a delightful dip in morning lows down to the 60s. This will certainly be refreshing for early risers who have dealt with sticky, muggy mornings for the past few months. The forecasted mid-60s will provide a much-needed break from the lingering summer heat.

Understanding Cold Fronts

While many may be eager for the cooler temperatures, it is important to remember that these mid-60s do come slightly earlier than what is commonly expected for fall weather. Typically, Austin experiences its first significant cold front closer to the end of September, generally between September 17 and September 23. The cold front expected this weekend, however, is not quite the same as the strong cold fronts we might feel later in the month.

This upcoming cold front will only succeed in lowering the overnight temperatures, while the afternoons will still remain warm, staying in the comfortable range of the mid-80s. In fact, Austin has experienced even cooler weather than this during early September in previous years, making this weekend’s change feel less monumental.

Historical Temperatures in September

If we look back at the records of the coolest temperatures recorded for the first five days of September throughout the years, we see that they have all been below 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Some of the coolest Septembers on record also date back to the 1900s, with September 1974 securing the top spot for the coolest month on record. Interestingly, September 2001 is noted as the only September in the past 20 years that managed to make the top 25 list for cooler temperatures, showcasing how exceptional cool spells are becoming across the decades.

What to Expect

As the month of September continues, everyone in Austin will be keeping a close eye on the weather. The slight drop in overnight temperatures serves as a gentle reminder that fall is around the corner, even if the afternoons still feel like summer.

So, for all the early birds in Austin, set your alarm clocks and enjoy those cool morning walks and coffee on the porch this weekend!
