Toll Rates in Austin Area Set to Increase on January 1, 2025

Are you driving around Austin? Well, it’s time to mark your calendars because toll rates in the area are set to go up starting January 1, 2025! The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority (CTRMA) recently announced that toll fees will see a slight increase, leaving many drivers to plan their travel budgets accordingly.

The Scoop on the Toll Roads

Several popular toll roads will be affected by these changes, and you might be wondering whether you’ll notice a big difference in your wallet. The toll roads included in this update are the 183A Toll, 290 Toll, 71 Toll Lane, 45SW Toll, 183 Toll, and the MoPac Express Lane. In most cases, drivers using electronic tags in typical two-axle vehicles will see a bump of about 2.44% in their tolls. This translates to an increase of roughly one to five cents.

However, some locations will see even larger hikes. If you’re passing through the Crystal Falls ramp, the Crystal Falls Mainline Plaza, or the Lakeline Mainline Plaza, be prepared for an additional nine cents! Plus, the MoPac Express Lane will be slightly pricier too, with an eight-cent increase in its base minimum rate.

Updated Rates You Should Know

As the new year approaches, savvy drivers should familiarize themselves with the updated toll rates. Here are some key details for two-axle vehicles:

  • Crystal Falls Parkway Ramps: $0.62 if you use a tag; $0.93 if paying by mail.
  • Crystal Falls Mainline Plaza: $1.43 if you use a tag; $2.15 if paying by mail.
  • Lakeline Mainline Plaza: $0.78 if you use a tag; $1.17 if paying by mail.

Do keep in mind that mainline rates may vary depending on the location and the payment method you choose. If you aren’t a tag user, it’s certainly worth considering switching over.

What’s New on the Road?

Next year, drivers can also expect the opening of the 183 Phase III Project, which will extend the 183A Toll to just north of SH 29. This expansion promises to further improve traffic flow in the area.

Payment Options Galore

Worried about how to pay for these tolls? Don’t fret! The CTRMA offers a multitude of payment options. You can use several electronic tags, including:

  • North Texas Tollway Authority’s TollTag
  • Harris County Toll Road Authority’s EZ TAG
  • Kansas Turnpike Authority’s K-TAG
  • Other tags from authorities in Oklahoma and Florida

For those who prefer the Pay By Mail option, keep in mind that it is 50% more expensive than using electronic tags plus a $1 processing charge. If you want a more budget-friendly solution, consider setting up a Mobility Authority Prepaid Registered Account. This option requires a minimum deposit of $25, and you can enjoy a 25% discount on Pay By Mail rates!

Be Mindful of Your Tags

One last thing to keep in mind—if you forget to attach your electronic tag, you’ll face a 10% increase due to administrative costs. So, make sure you’re all set before hitting the road!

In the sprawling landscape of Austin, knowing the ins and outs of toll rates is crucial for all drivers. With these increases on the horizon, planning ahead will ensure your travel remains smooth and efficient. Happy driving!
